Pupils: Mark and Matthew Russ

School: Dunn Middle

Current Placement: Self-Contained Classroom—Educable Mentally Disabled

Ages: 11 years, 7 months

Family Structure and Home Environment

Mark and Matthew live with their parents, Ross and Sherry Russ. Mr. Russ is forty-four years old and is temporarily employed as an equipment operator with the Dunn City Department of Sanitation. Ms. Russ is forty-one and is a homemaker. The twins also live with their two older brothers and an older sister. Ross Jr. is twenty years old and is unemployed. Jacob is eighteen and is currently working as a dishwasher. Their sister, Joy, is fifteen and is a student at Dunn High School. All of the Russ children either have been or currently are enrolled in special education classes.

The Russ family lives in a very small house for a family of seven. Their home is modest but appears cared for and respected by the whole family.

Parental Perception of the Child’s Developmental Progress and Needs

Mr. and Ms. Russ feel that neither Matthew nor Mark is making much progress in basic academic skills. Their observation is that the twins are still unable to read and write for any practical purposes. Neither of the parents can read. Both say they never had the opportunity to learn to read when they were “growing up in the country and working on the farm.” They are less concerned about reading, however, than they are about the speech of their sons. They feel that this is their sons’ major problem area. They mentioned that other children make fun of Matthew’s and Mark’s speech, and that they are hurt by this teasing. Mr. and Ms. Russ feel that Matthew’s and Mark’s social development is significantly behind that of other children their age. Again, speech is the focus of concern. Mr. Russ says that he would like to see Matthew and Mark be able to “talk better.”

Additional Comments

Mr. and Ms. Russ have only one long-range goal for their twin boys that they grow up to be “able to work.” They are willing to do all that they are able to do to help their sons.
