Essay (Example)

Minimum Length: 650 words

An essays that utilizes examples to support the claims made in its thesis must be careful to 1) offer reliable examples and 2) be able to connect those examples to its central claim.

Choose one of the following topics to write an example essay about:

1. Write an essay on your view of the purpose of a college education. Make sure to craft a strong thesis and provide critical supporting examples to illustrate and support your claim.
2. Write a paper using examples either to describe or to demonstrate the falsity of a common male or female stereotype. This topic is based on Barbara Ehrenreich’s essay on p. 178.
3. Examine John Grisham’s essay on p. 181-183. Then write an example essay in which you present some of the jobs you or someone you know has held. Be sure to establish a thesis that will unify your examples (Make sure that all your examples clearly connect and support a central idea or message that will serve as the core, the thesis, for your paper.)

Use the checklist provided on p. 186 to double check your paper and revise before submitting.

In this Essay, you will support a thesis with specific examples that you explain and analyze in your essay. So Essay 3 should build on the skills you’ve already been learning in the course. This assignment is a bit more challenging. Remember you don’t just describe something and you don’t tell a story about it. You want to instead use critical reasoning to support your main point. As a result, this essay will need to be a little more structured and organized. You need a clear central point (the thesis) with very specific paragraphs that articulate reasons and examples that your main point is valid and valuable. So this is a much more structured and linear assignment. Don’t use a story to support this thesis…use reason and analysis.Sometimes students make the mistake of throwing together a narrative or having lots of random ideas scattered over the paper. You need to be careful to clearly communicate a central idea and support that specifically. Be very intentional about making your paper prove your points and provide examples.

Just a reminder to be working on that third paper. And remember that you want to use REASONS, CRITICAL IDEAS, and CRITICAL EXAMPLES as support for your thesis in this Essay. This isn’t a narrative paper and sometimes students get confused and shift into a narrative. Don’t use personal anecdotes. Those aren’t the same as critical reasons and examples that you are explaining and analyzing to support your central claim. You CAN use personal pronouns or examples from your own life as long as they are framed critically and you are explaining/analyzing them NOT just retelling them. Explain your thesis for Essay 3. This is an essay that relies on examples to provide the support for the critical idea you are offering in the thesis.
