In Chapter 7 of his book, Leonardo to the Internet: Technology & Culture from the Renaissance to the Present, Thomas Misa describes the events leading up to the construction of the atomic bomb. He also provides a number of reasons why two atomic bombs — one of which was a uranium bomb, the other a plutonium bomb — were dropped on two cities in Japan even though Germany had already surrendered to the Allied forces. After the bombs were dropped, Supreme Allied Commander General Eisenhower remarked, “The Japanese were ready to surrender and it wasn’t necessary to hit them with that awful thing.” (Misa, p. 204). Many other commentators have offered additional reasons — not mentioned by Misa — as to why the bombs were dropped, including racist attitudes held by United States officials against the Japanese people. Still others have made numerous arguments stating why the bombs should not have been used at all. In a well-written, 300-400 word essay (feel free to exceed that amount if you have more to say), please address the following:
What do you think are the reasons why the United States decided to drop two atomic bombs on Japan despite the previous surrender of Germany? Given the reasons offered by Misa and others, do you think that the decision by the United Stated was inevitable? Why or why not? Do you think that the decision was necessary or justified? Why or why not?
After World War II, the United States launched the “Atoms for Peace” program. Briefly describe the intended purpose of the program and identify at least two lasting legacies of the program.
In his Farewell Address, President Eisenhower states that “The free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity.” Throughout the course, we have examined several instances where university research has been shaped and directed by government and industry patronage. Can you identify an example where this has occurred at Drexel — or any other university for that matter?
For this essay, feel free to draw from as many outside sources that you need to support your arguments. If you do include outside sources, be sure to clearly identify them. Keep in mind that there is more than one single answer to these questions. However, you can offer a reasoned argument backed up by sources to make a strong claim. Your grade depends on how well you argue your case based on the sources that you provide.
