writing about this piece of art

A citation of your source in MLA format (Times New Roman, 12pt font), followed by:

• A brief, one sentence summary/description of the content and focus of the book or article

• The credibility of the author
• The source’s usefulness to your research
• An evaluation of the author’s method or conclusions.

• Your reactions and overall opinion of the source: Did you like it? Was there anything you felt was left out or could have been added? Did it have too many pictures? Not enough pictures? How does it compare to others on the subject? Was the writing too dry? Was it captivating?

Example: Hess, Alan. Oscar Niemeyer: Houses. New York: Rizzoli, 2006. Print. In his book, Alan Hess, who has authored another text on Niemeyer, researches and provides photographs of the many houses designed by Oscar Niemeyer. This book was unique in that it didn’t focus on the more famous buildings designed by Niemeyer. Hess stresses that Niemeyer downplayed his houses by not writing about them, by only letting certain ones be photographed, and by purposefully leaving some of them out on official lists of his work. Each “chapter” of the book is a specific home designed by Niemeyer, with information as well as from photos of houses exterior and interior. Hess writes about Niemeyer’s appreciation for the Brazilian landscape, and having photos in the text to illustrate this is helpful- the scenery complements each home. By looking at multiple examples of homes that Niemeyer designed, it is easy to see that he didn’t follow specific guidelines when designing homes and that they evolved and changed as he grew as an architect.
