1.Gonda- Colonial Women. Describe the situation of colonial women in North
America and use examples from the essay to illustrate your answer.
A women life in Colonial America was really exhausting and difficult. Women
played a big role to survive their families. Back then, everyone in the family used to
work really hard to produce and provide the necessities of life, but women had a big role
to play, in other words, they had most of the work to handle and to help the family
survive. They were responsible to cook, clean, take care of the kids (motherhoods),
provides the necessities to the household and other things that a family and a house
need. They participated in jobs that involved females, and labor was very valuable in
colonial America, which most women were able to demonstrate their work by pursuing
position as merchants.
During the colonial times, the 18th century, women role and work was intensely
difficult and society was self-centered. In many poor families, women’s full job was to
take care of the kids, cook meals, sew clothes, doctor their family, take care of their
animals, maintaining fire, take care of the kitchen garden and of course do all the
cleaning. They also used to make household goods like candles and sell them for a
family income.Women were considered to be “weaker vessel†not as strong physically
and mentally as men and less emotionally stable. Their life was based/depended on the
status, wealth, race, religion and the society or colony they are from. Some of colonial
women were hat makers, silversmith and merchants and they also practiced other
trades that their husbands used to practice before. These women lived generally on
margins, in some cases, if their husband get injured or died, their children or the wife is
more likely to take the husband place forcefully to earn the income for the family to live.
The situation of enslaved women had even more tougher times. Slaves women did not
have lots of kids because they did not have enough money to take care of all the kids.
Also, they were not allowed to legally marry anyone, unless allowed by their master and
also, they didn’t have any rights on their children. On the same hand, if the master
wanted to sell the children or husband of his or her slave, they were allowed and by
that, many families were broken apart from one another because once they are sold to
other people as slaves they might not ever be heard from again.
In conclusion, the American Revolution had a great impact on women. The
revolutionary war brought women in to many cases because they played a small role in
the war. They sew uniforms for soldiers, wrote small articles in the newspapers about
the war, and it opened the doors to many opportunities for them. The role of women
started to change and they gain more attention. They started educating themselves in
reading and writing and they even picked up on Greek, Latin, and math. Seeing the
change in the role of women is great especially after going through all the situation and
the hard time, but they kept themselves strong to protect their lives and their families as
well.

most of the time her husband John Adams was away working while she stayed home
taking care of the children and the family’s farm.
Abigail was the best known women of the American Revolution period because
of who her husband was, which means that she had to stand up for the rights of women
and try to protect them as much as she could. She supported independence, and
famously argued that it should be applied to women as well as men. She criticized the
president legal system that placed all authority in males. She reminded the people that
her husband and political leaders wanted to retain “absolute power over wives.†She
also strongly supported education for women, writing for John in 1778 that “you need
not be told how much female education is neglected, nor how fashionable it has been to
ridicule female learning.â€She was so supportive to gain the right for women and to
have equality.
As a first lady, Abigail maintained and voiced strong opinions about the political
issues and debates of the day, including the Federalist vs. anti-Federalist struggles.
She wrote at the time of her struggle to keep herself in check. She spent much of her
husband’s time in office at home in Massachusetts, but in 1800 she moved into the
new presidential mansion in Washington D.C., becoming the first lady to live in the
White House. Abigail died before the election of her son to be the president in the
