Post Discussion: Who Can You Trust?

In high school athletics, parents and volunteers help to make things run smoothly, or do they? After viewing the short video and article, Experts: Parent Volunteers Stealing from Fundraisers (Holfield, 2015), and reading the sections in the text (Weinstein, 2013) on pages 8–9, you should have a good understanding of the economic impact and volunteer support issues you may have in your given area. Read the two scenarios below. State your opinion on each situation and discuss what you would do. These are hypothetical situations, but ones that could happen.

Scenario 1:

You are an athletic director at a high school in your community. You have been on the job for one year, but have lived in the community and been involved with the school for 10 years. During your first year, you continue to use the same fundraising techniques and strategies set in place by the previous athletic director, as they have been successful in the past. After reviewing the budget, you notice a discrepancy in the amount of fundraising dollars that should be in the account. As a favor to you, the former athletic director, who had been at the school for 25 years, decided to stay on and help with the fundraising deposits and withdrawals. Other than yourself and the principal of the school, he is the only one who has access to the accounts. There is an amount of $5,000 missing from what should be in the fundraising account. What do you do?

Scenario 2:

You are serving as athletic director and head coach (pick your sport) at your local high school. Your team always has the top uniforms and best equipment at the school. Parents and other coaches are concerned that you are not distributing funds equally amongst the various athletic teams. You have a fundraising campaign for your team as well as the athletic department. How do you address this situation?
