Here is the International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU’s) definition of cybersecurity:
“Cybersecurity is the collection of tools, policies, security concepts, security safeguards, guidelines, risk management approaches, actions, training, best practices, assurance and technologies that can be used to protect the cyber environment and organization and user’s assets. Organization and user’s assets include connected computing devices, personnel, infrastructure, applications, services, telecommunications systems, and the totality of transmitted and/or stored information in the cyber environment. Cybersecurity strives to ensure the attainment and maintenance of the security properties of the organization and user’s assets against relevant security risks in the cyber environmentâ€. (ITU, U.D.)
According to the ITU, general security objectives of cybersecurity comprise availability, integrity and confidentiality.
Cybersecurity is important for individuals, businesses, governments, and educational institutions. For parents, for instance, online safety of children is extremely important. It is also important to take a number of measures to protect financial security. Security awareness and planning can help small, medium-sized as well as large businesses protect their digital assets including intellectual property and trade secrets, and reduce loss of productivity due to downtime. Since local, state, and central governments maintain huge amount of personal data and records on their citizens, as well as confidential government information, they become lucrative targets for cybercriminals. Better security would help them provide reliable and secure services to the public, maintain citizen-to-government communications, and protect sensitive information (Cisco 2010; Kshetri 2010).
