what are the characteristics and challenges of an innovator

These are the cases you ‘ll select (one at first) from to examine innovation in an unfamilar field (literature, psychology, science, or sociology) and relate the challenges innovators faced to the problem the innovator needed to solve….

  • W.E.B. DuBois’ The Philadelphia Negro;
  • Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye;
  • Thomas Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions;
  • or Carl Rogers’ Carl Rogers on Encounter Groups.

Pick one of the above–you can do more, but certainly aren’t required to–and locate the reading in e-Reserves.

One of the big obstacles in studying innovation is the idea that there are creative types–brilliant trailblazers like Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, Stevie Wonder, and the cases above–who just pursue never-been-done-before paths. If that’s the case, then it’s the birth lottery that determines who’ll be innovators and who won’t. Doesn’t that let the rest of us off the hook pretty easily? Let’s see if we can try on the problem-solving explanation for size and, if it works out, view the innovators in a new light. Could it be that they’re not a wholly different lot, but quite similar to people we encounter all the time, except more purposeful, risk-tolerant, focused, and persistent, as well as, occasionally, luckier?

If you’re wondering why these are a) old and b) not about technology, here’s the reason. We’re looking at innovations not necessarily for their use of new technology, but for problem-solving in a new way.

Quoting from the syllabus: “Two or so (it depends on how you write) well thought out and responsive paragraphs per topic are required on each discussion from every student. So that’s 100-150 words per discussion as a guideline. That said, I’d rather read two dozen words that are salient and crisply put than 100+ words of “MUSS” (Make Up Some Stuff), and so, I’ll bet, would your classmates and the Writing Fellow. Responsive statements (commenting or raising issues about something another student or I wrote) as well as original insights are encouraged. Cogent dialog raising or addressing issues that you’ve thought about are most likely to earn an A.”
