week 5 forum post responses 7

In need of a 250 word response/discussion to each of the following forum posts. Agreement/disagreement/and/or continuing the discussion.

Original forum discussion/topic post is as follows:

By now, each of you have experienced one or two “ah ha” moments, where you felt that you learned an important lesson in your writing along the way. Share two of these experiences with your peers on the forum, noting what you learned, and what you did to resolve the issue or learning experience.

Add the following bolded questions above your answers to ensure all content has been clearly included.

Experience 1 and how I resolved issue:

One of the important experiences that I learned from was when looking at my feedback for my outline assignment. It didn’t occur to me when I was setting up the structure for the outline that the structure should have been taken directly from our Capstone template. For example, while I included everything that was asked in the assignment guidelines (or had a placemark for a few items that I simply wasn’t ready to complete, i.e. definitions), I didn’t include headings for many of these things. One that stands out is for the Introduction. Traditionally, APA format does not have a heading for the introduction section. I was following that “normal” formatting because of prior papers. So, while this wasn’t necessarily something I could go back and change, it was a learning moment. That template should have been my best friend since week one instead of something I looked at once a week and continuously thought “not yet”.

I did for my own purpose, make the necessary changes to my outline so it could be a living document that I added to this past week while completing the annotated bibliography. In hindsight, I wish I had taken the headings from the capstone template and not just focused on answering the questions. Regardless, here we are beginning to write our papers this week and as I look at the capstone template I realize, “Ah ha!” we’ve written a lot for our paper already.

Experience 2 and how I resolved issue:

I feel strong about where we are right now in the process of our project. I wrote my plan of action for the week this morning and realized that not only am I on target to stick to my daily calendar I crafted on the second day of the course, that I am not nearly as stressed about “beginning” the writing of the rough draft this week as I thought I would be. So, my second “Ah ha!” was more of a “Eureka!”, a lot of this is done already. We have written detailed summaries about our research. We have a lot of our paper written, ready to plug in. Now it’s time to focus on transitional work, discussing how our studies are similar, how they are different. How they are different isn’t just did they investigate something different, were the findings different, but also include how the data was acquired and what methods were used to analyze the results. So, “ah-ha!” to last weeks forum where we talked about when and why different methods of analysis were used. Additionally, being introduced to SAGE Research Methods by the librarian was extremely helpful. I think this will be very helpful in making these comparisons.

Everything is coming together, and it feels good. I’m not sure if I did this forum right, maybe my ah-ha moments were more moments of appreciation than moments that needed to be resolved. I’ve already discussed my previous problems/resolutions with including qualitative work, so it seems like it would have been redundant to have discussed that again. But for the sake of making sure I highlight two specific experiences, my second one would be finding qualitative research helped me have resources to illustrate the lived experiences that I am so familiar with that I was going to fail to highlight.

Experience 1 and how I resolved issue:

The first experience I’d like to share is that I have learned that my writing style needs improvement. Each assignment I receive insight on errors to improve the finished product. I have actually visited the learning center and have taken account to the corrections given to me by Dr. Curtin. The resolution is to continue to press forward and submit practice items for correction before the finished product. We are always learning and always trying to improve so finding a weakness is not a bad thing. I find peace in knowing that I have made it this far and this is literally the culminating moment before graduation. I realize that anything worth having will require some intense work, commitment, and oversight. The oversight of Dr. Curtin has been beneficial because she is very clear in the outlines of how she desires the papers to be completed. The work is on my part with ensuring I am doing my best and meeting the deadlines for assignments. The commitment comes into part because no one desires to fail and at this point failure is not an option.

Experience 2 and how I resolved issue:

The second experience I’d like to share is that my topic originally from week one to week four has shifted. There was so much research past and present on forming healthy relationships and what was needed to form healthy relationships. I felt so overwhelmed and some articles had the numbers for statistics but they manner in which it was collected would not have been valid for my paper. I had to research over and over and read article after article until I found things that would be beneficial for my assignment. I learned that just because the article is an scholarly article that has been peer reviewed in the school library doesn’t mean it will fit the criteria for the assignment. I also encountered some articles being on point but not fitting the timeline for 5 to 7 years. That issue was resolved by looking to see what studies were revisited because the studies completed again normally all hit the proper timeline. I have relearned how to gather data and also learned to be flexible in my research and studies. When you are stuck in a one way one process mindset then you are not able to adjust if you need to and that prohibits progress sometimes. Both experiences have caused me to be able to shift in a positive progressive way for success.

Experience 1 and how I resolved issue:

The first experience where I learned a lesson is, I had some difficulty with finding articles that were within the appropriate time frame of 5-7 years, along with being in the APUS library, and also met all the requirements for the literature review. I would get frustrated because I would really like an article, I would start reading it, citing it, and then I would realize it wasn’t the correct time frame. Initially I was having issues with finding enough articles to use, and I was being redirected to paying sites thru the library. So I took the time to ask for assistance thru APUS library chat, which I have never used in the past. They were so patient and explained how if I open a different browser I may be able to open the articles I was searching for, I was on a different computer that day. They even asked for the information to see if it was my computer or a glitch on their end. They also help with words that could help with my topic, and reminded me to check the requirements on the left side of the screen, along with the time frame of work I was looking for. I was disconnected from the chat with them and they went above and beyond and sent me an email, and took the time to summarize what we went over with a few additional tips. I felt this resource was an excellent tool, one I never thought to use in the past. Dr. Curtin mentioned reaching out to them for assistance if needed in one of our messages and she was correct. I would recommend chatting with them or sending a message to them in the library if you ever hit a dead end or have issues finding what you need. It was a great refresher on how to gather the correct data, and I learn to expand my research in order to find more articles I could use for my project. So thank you Dr. Curtin for reminding us of that resource!

Experience 2 and how I resolved issue:

My second experience where I learned a lesson would be, learning to edit my summaries to no more than 250 words, and remembering, and also being reminded, that writing concisely takes practice. I would say one “ah ha” for me was when I sorted out my 6 articles under each topic, all 24 of them, and began writing my annotated bibliography, along with taking all the previously mentioned advice, and I was pretty impressed how it came together in the end! I feel like I am on track and looking forward to making my corrections on the annotated bibliography and putting the information all together in the capstone template and moving forward. This course thus far has been challenging yet interesting at the same time, I’m looking forward to completing the rough draft first and then ultimately finishing it up.
