Week 3 – Discussion 2

The author of your text suggests that the ability to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi is available everywhere Bowles, (2013). As such, there are risks to your data and personally identifiable information. These considerations are especially important when we consider connecting our home network to the Internet. We may take for granted such functionality as online banking, e-commerce, and other transactions where we share personally identifiable information. Refer to the Siles (2016) article,Securing Your Home Network (Links to an external site.)for more information on securing your home wireless network. (150-200 Words)Based on this week’s readings, what are some of the important measures you can take to ensure that your home wireless network is safe and secure? After your primary post, respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts. (2-3 Sentences)Post 1Hello class,There are many different measures you can take to make sure that your home network is safe. Some of them include using a unique name for your network, having a strong password, and/or maybe using a VPN. When setting up your home WIFI you are normally given a default name for the network but changing it to something else could be a potential measure to ensure it is not tampered with. A strong password is always the best approach in computer network security especially for those that may know you personally. If the password is something they know you maybe are related with then it could maybe be your password for most devices. That is normally the case for most people such as a pets name, child’s name, etc. VPN’s are used to encrypt your network giving it that privacy and also hides your IP address so that no one can connect to your device or network.Post 2Hi Class,There are quite a few things that you can do to ensure that your home wireless network is safe and secure.  The first thing to do is to change the name of your wireless router.  When you purchased it, one was automatically given to it. Next, make sure that your password is very strong and unique.  You do not want to use one that a hacker could easily guess.  The best thing to do is to come up with one that uses special characters, upper case, lower case and numbers. Changing the password frequently will make it even harder for a hacker to access it.  Also, you will want to ensure that your router’s software is up to date, and that its firewall is turned on.
