In a well-designed educational program, the objectives should spell out the step-by-step process that leads to an achievable goal or outcome (Edelman, Kudzma, & Mandle, 2014, p.223).

The objective and goals should be mutually determined by the patient, patient’s family and the nurse. If the patient is not involved in the development right from the beginning the nurse could be wasting time. There may be times when what the nurse thinks is important may not be to the patient. I recently cared for a patient with a new ostomy due to Crohn’s complications. When the wound care nurse began instructions, it became apparent that the patient could not even look at the ostomy site. When describing the patient educational process authors Marshall, Dall’Oglio, Davis, Verret, & Jones (2015) recommend nurses “start with an introduction by stating the learning goals, explain why they are important, and give a brief overview of what you will cover. Motivationally, this is a critical step, because the reason for needing to learn a particular task or skill may not be one the learner has “bought into.” As such, it is at this stage the nurse would also seek to understand the learner’s side of it and leverage that” (p. 7). Obviously, trying to teach this patient how to put on an ostomy bag was out of the question. Not only was she not psychologically ready but she clearly did not “buy into” the educational program. Another reason to involve the patient/family from the start is if the steps in the plan are too difficult, the patient may become confused, distracted or frustrated and just give up.

Once the objectives are determined they need to be written with an action verb in clear, specific language that spells out what the patient and family have to do to show that the objective has been met (New Hampshire Nurses Association). The objectives need to describe exactly what is expected of the them. This will allow the nurse a means of measuring the patient’s progress.

Involving a patient and their family in the process of developing clearly articulate objectives is one way that healthcare providers can create effective educational programs.
