  • “[There is] a rising tide in all advanced societies of clinical depression and dysphoria (especially among the young), increasing distrust of each other and of political and other institutions, declining belief that the lot of the average man is getting better…a tragic erosion of family solidarity and community integration together with an apparent decline in warm, intimate relations among friends.”

1. In this discussion, I will engage in defending the assertion that “[There is] a rising tide in all advanced societies of clinical depression and dysphoria (especially among the young), increasing distrust of each other and of political and other institutions, the declining belief that the lot of the average man is getting better…a tragic erosion of family solidarity and community integration together with an apparent decline in warm, intimate relations among friends.” We live in a society in which many people do not consider the need for showing other people remorse and acting morally towards one another. Many people have engaged in undertaking practices that tend to limit the need for showing trust to other people in society. For example, from a Washington post, it depicted that only 18% of the Americans today have faith in President Donald Trump administration, especially on the matters relating to health and foreign diplomacy. Donald Trump has engaged in criticizing Obamacare and wants it to be abolished, which has been saving millions of American health through the provision of reliable, adequate, and affordable medical care. The increasing distrust of the Americans towards Trump administration has played a leading role towards the African Americans believing that life as black is getting worse each day to the many policies that are being passed by the administration.

2. I agree “[There is] a rising tide in all advanced societies of clinical depression and dysphoria (especially among the young), increasing distrust of each other and of political and other institutions, declining belief that the lot of the average man is getting better…a tragic erosion of family solidarity and community integration together with an apparent decline in warm, intimate relations among friends.”

As a student, I’m heavily focused on graduating in the spring. I personally don’t care for making or having close relationships with people. My mindset is only on school, which in a way sounds selfish. But it’s the hard truth, I have to be more worried about getting my degrees in order to make a sustainable income to provide for my future self and family. I feel most people can relate or maybe have a hard time balancing spending time with friends, due to work or school. I try to plan hanging out with friends but, the plan usually doesn’t go as plan. The most I talk to my friends is through social media. Although it’s not a close relationship, I can see how their life is going and vice versa. With everything going on with the economy for example; when TSA workers lost their income due the govt. shutdown, they were still required to work and that’s when people were setting up Gofundme pages for them. For them its paranoia 24/7 hoping it doesn’t happen again.

3. “[There is] a rising tide in all advanced societies of clinical depression and dysphoria (especially among the young), increasing distrust of each other and of political and other institutions, declining belief that the lot of the average man is getting better…a tragic erosion of family solidarity and community integration together with an apparent decline in warm, intimate relations among friends.”

I defend this assertion, in today’s era of social media, social networking should be a more simple and quick, households and governments should be more harmonious, but in fact, the opposite is true. For example, the protests took place in Hong Kong in China this year, millions of people protest caused serious violence, and this is precise as a result of the contradiction between people and the government directly, the law of the people’s distrust of the Hong Kong government put in place a lot of the police was swallowed up by violence, serious and finger was the bite people. The increasing distrust of the people often leads to conflicts, while the exaggeration and falsity of the news further lead to social distrust. I think it’s a big part of the responsibility to support social media networks when supposedly harmonious societies become conflicted, so I defend this assertion.
