DQ 9 Hypothesis Testing
Consumer goods manufacturing companies may use t-tests to determine if the quality of their products is consistent. Hellmann’s for example may randomly test 100 bottles of mayonnaise to calculate the mean weight along with the standard deviation of the bottles. The mean weight of the 100 bottles is then compared to the weight stated on the bottle which would be the population mean. Hellmann’s would not want significant differences between the mean weight of the sample and the population mean.
Identify another real world situation where we would compare the sample mean to the population mean. How would a test be conducted to determine if the sample mean is significantly different from the population mean?
Is the obvious answer always the end result? The hare was expected to win the race between the tortoise and the hare. Goliath was expected to come out on top with David and Goliath. In the case of a fox vs. a chicken, the outcome is predictable and the chicken becomes the fox’s dinner.
