Choice 9: “Hate Speech on Campus” (Tuman 383-).

Introduction:

The author Joseph S. Truman talks about hate speech in his article, “Hate Speech on Campus” in which he talks about different types of hate speech that are been used to disturb the comfortability and made it hard for other minorities and other people and to harras them. He mentions that it starts to become a big thing in the colleges, the colleges around the United States start banning or restricting the foul languages and make their student feel more comfortable. Sharing his personal accident he dealt with in the past, he said that people used to make fun of him for being different as a white man, and he can only imagine how it feels to others when they had to go through that. He shared a story about one of his undergraduate students where the student says that is is not hard to restrict the common ones that are for sure considered hate speech. He then goes off and said yes the people are aware of the common words but most of the time racist slurs are far worse but their effect is less devastating. How can we stop that? He tells in his article about the story of Michigan where a student teacher mentions that those words are so big that if we come to stop those, we might have to parts of lectures. In the end, he shares his idea where he says that to learn about those words and problems, there is no better place than to learn it our classes. This is the best place to learn about the bad and good and it is the only way to deal with ignorance.

After reading the article, I personally would say that I strongly agree with the matter he mentioned in his article because it becomes more than a bullying issue. His results say that we should talk about these problems in the classes where a student can learn better about how their action that they take whether on purpose or without purpose can hurt others. I personally have an example of myself, when I was starting my school and start talking to other people and start hanging out, there were times when they said something that was not appropriate for me and it was sad but they didn’t know that because they weren’t aware of it. Those subtleties and assumptions behind that he is trying to teach are that if we do that then it can help students to see why something is wrong or why it is right. For example, it is common that to understand something, a person has to first learn that piece of information. The point he is trying to make is that a person will not be able to find why something is wrong until someone (teacher or parents) describes it first and which is why we should talk about it in school and make people aware of it.
