For this online assignment, choose a meme from your life and apply the critical meme analysis framework that we reviewed in lecture (SOAP-E). What you choose as a meme is up to you – it can be a commercial / film / tv show / song that you have experienced, a value that your family holds, something you were taught as a child, or even an internet meme. Make sure the meme is appropriate for the class, and give enough information (or a photo) so people who may not be familiar with the meme can understand it.

  • YOUR POST : Share the meme (either describe it or provide a link / image / video that illustrates the meme), and explain the subject of the meme (what is the basic message of the meme…what information is the meme delivering), the origin of the meme (who do you think created / delivered the meme?), the audience for the meme (who receives this message?), the purpose of the meme (what is the consequence of this information being delivered, and how might the meme help individuals in the group), and the emotion of the meme (what is the tone of this meme? Is it positive / negative / kind / sarcastic / etc)?
  • YOUR REPLY : Reply to at least one other person’s meme – as a scholar trained in critical meme analysis, what might be some other ways to interpret the meme? Can you see the meme through some lens of power, interdependence / independence, or some other cultural / social / political issue? There’s right or wrong answer – I just want y’all to think critically about MEMES and their role in our society. If you can’t identify another function of the meme, or see the meme through a lens of power, then think about (and ask) a question you have about the meme and how it operates in the environment, and why this question would matter / what the question might reveal about the culture / society.

REPLY TO THIS POST:

Subject: The meme shows how it can be irritating for individuals who wear glasses because people can be insensitive towards them when they genuinely cannot see clearly.

Origin: The origin of the meme is probably a person who wears glasses that got tired of people trying to wear them or asking questions such as, “How many fingers am I holding up?”

Audience: The targeted audience can either be for glasses wearers who relate to having their eyesight played with or to people who take others glasses so they can understand that it can be irritable.

Purpose: The purpose of this meme is to show that people who wear glasses, like me, already understand that our eyesight is bad and taking them away can be obnoxious.

Emotion: The tone of the meme is supposed to be sarcastic and humorous.
