Answer one: Servant leadership is based on the concept that a leader’s primary focus is to serve others thus building trust and creating followers for which they provide guidance and leadership (Thomas, 2018). Servant leaders provide characteristics such as compassion, listening, empathizing, commitment, and stewardship to while seeking ways to best serve others and their community. Through building trusting relationships and valuing others, servant nursing leaders are able to form highly effective teams that seek to optimize the patient experience and outcomes (Thomas, 2018).

Two essential qualities of servant leaders include awareness and persuasiveness (Thomas, 2018). Awareness involves a deeper understanding of the perceptions and feelings of others. Having an in-depth understanding of the needs and values of others and effectively applying this to serve and lead others can positively impact future progress. Having this understanding allows a servant leader to have a higher level of influence towards motivations and decision-making. Persuasiveness is optimized when a leader has awareness and understanding of others and sees them as valuable individuals.

Qualities of awareness and persuasiveness support interprofessional communication while providing patient care. It is important for a nurse to understand the needs, values, fears, and state of mind of the patient and family members. Demonstrating empathy, compassion and active listening while providing quality care shows the value on has for their patient. Persuasiveness supports patient care as a means of motivating them towards healthy outcomes through making sound, evidence-based choices with their treatment, and providing a feeling of empowerment towards these outcomes.

Answer two: The concept of servant leadership has Biblical roots, such as the way Jesus provided servant leadership to gain followers (Thomas, 2019). Servant leaders have the desire to serve, followed by the desire to lead, with efforts directed towards their community and people they are helping (Thomas, 2019). The qualities that servant leaders possess are: listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment, and community building (Thomas, 2019).

When we look at the qualities of listening and empathy we see certain qualities that are essential to building a team. Listening involves being able to effectively communicate through verbal and nonverbal communication. Servant leaders know how truly listen to staff and are able to pick up on all forms of communication (Thomas, 2019). Empathy is important in leadership because the leader understands how to place themselves in their employees “shoes” so to speak and recognizes each employee for their individuality. They are able to understand the feelings of others and motivation behind actions. This can also be viewed as emotional intelligence. Hutchinson and Hurley wrote that “emotional intelligence and ethical behavior of peers has a significant impact on the ethical behavior within the work team” (2013). If a leader starts out being emotionally intelligent by listening and showing empathy, they can build an ethical team from within.

Answer three: According to Greenleaf (1970) a servant leader is a servant first. It starts with having the inborn feeling that one wants to serve, meaning that the person has the desire to serve, and wanting to help others by identifying and meeting the needs of colleagues, customers, and communities. The Servant leader, primary focus on the growth and well-being of people and to the communities to which they belong. In addition, servant leader shares power puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform very well.

Two qualities of servant leadership and how they support interprofessional communication in providing patient care are:

  1. Servant leaders value different opinions.Servant leaders acknowledge every individual’s opinion and continously seek contributions, this quality is very crucial in a healthcare setting as it gives health care providers the freedom to express their opinions, grievances, and observations freely. This can bring about positive changes in care provision.
  1. A servant leader encourages. There are times when healthcare professionals make mistake at the job. Instead of scolding and blaming, a servant leader counsels and encourages and comes up with suggestions on how to avoid such a mistake. This boosts the self-confidence of the person in question and if for any reason the incident occurs again, the care provider will have the courage to meet or consult with the servant leader freely.
