From the very first moments of the world’s existence, words paid a crucial role. God used words to create every single thing that we see and feel in Genesis 1. In the last times, the brothers will conquer over the devil by the blood of Jesus and the word of their testimony (Revelation 12:11). In today’s society though, words seem to have lost much of their value due to social media platforms such as Facebook or Snapchat (Olmstead, 2013). While many can try to say that believe that words are not a big deal and the heart of the message is what really matters, at the end of the day, words are important. This can be particularly seen when considering the difference between the words autonomy and freedom and the confusion that has been uncovered in Western cultures as a result of these words not being properly understood. Author Abdu Murray argues, in his book Saving Truth, that by misunderstanding autonomy as freedom, the culture has been reduced to chaos and its post-modern tendencies once again squish any denial that what the average American experiences today is anything less than freedom (2018). However, when a culture does not even understand the difference between the truth of God’s Word and the lies of self-pleasure, it should not be surprising that the culture has also misunderstood the feeling autonomy for freedom. In order to be free, the person must first realize that they are bound.

Before understanding how culture has been confused between the difference of freedom and of autonomy, it is important to define what autonomy means. It is the idea that someone is a law to themselves (Murray, p.49). We see this in the rise of sexual “freedom” and the corresponding rise of sexually transmitted diseases and problems (Mengo, Sharma, and Paula, 2016). While culture calls sexual irresponsibility and diversity freedom, it is in reality autonomy and has crippled the culture into a cycle of sin and sickness. Even though revolutionists may call for sexual freedom, it is ultimately becoming a slave to sin. Murray gives an example of a student who claims to be a six-foot-five-inch little girl from China, when, in reality, he is a five-foot-six-inch Caucasian man (2018). No one can confuse this claim as having freedom of identity, but rather a confused white man who might need a psychiatrist’s help. Just because someone claims to have the liberation to do this or that, does not mean that they have found freedom. Rather, they have created a law for themselves by which others must follow or accept. There can only be freedom if truth is rightly understood. In Christ, the Christian can truly find freedom. Christ has graciously bought the Believer freedom from sin, this world, and slavery to human nature that there may be freedom to worship and glorify Him forever. This is the sort of freedom that the culture desires, but all too often Western cultures pursue autonomy instead of the true freedom that comes from Christ.
