Research methods are determined by the researcher completing the study. Research can be quantitative or qualitative in nature. This paper will discuss the difference between quantitative research and qualitative research as well as the results produced by each (Gray, Grove, & Sutherland, 2017).

Quantitative research is objective in nature in that it seeks to measure or quantify relationships of variables and further divided into interventional research and non-interventional research according to Gray, Grove, & Sutherland (Gray, Grove, & Sutherland, 2017). Interventional research is cause and effect meaning the variables are manipulated in some way, non- interventional the variables are not manipulated and is mainly descriptive. Quantitative research utilizes theory to evaluate the variables generally generating statistical or numerical data as outcomes (Gray, Grove, & Sutherland, 2017).

Qualitative research is based upon the experience or perspective of the subjects involved. Obtaining hard numerical data for qualitative research difficult as noted in Quantitative research because the perspectives and experiences of people are difficult to quantify. Qualitative research seeks to give understanding to the needs of the patient by finding out basically what they think and how certain things affected them through surveys and face-to-face interviews (Williams, 2015). The results are generally not numerical but common emerging themes from the research that provide valuable information that can be used to provide more patient centered care (Williams, 2015).
