One of the traits that a good leader should possess in order to communicate effectively with their staff is interpersonal skills. Good interpersonal skills help a leader understand and predict challenges in workflow and therefore can easily meet the needs of employees and carry out the mission of the company more efficiently. (Bovee, 2013). When there is a break in communication, problems will follow. When communication flows down, meaning from the leader to the workers, workers may not feel comfortable to speak up or offer suggestions and view the leader as autocratic. All this could lead to the workers resenting the leader because they do not understand why things are happening. When communication flows up, workers may never understand where they fit in a company or may not feel that the leader cares about them. (Manning, 2019). One way communication, whether it flows up or down can lead to low production, disgruntled employees, and possibly, a high turn over of employees.

My manager’s average scores in the leadership style survey were 8/10, but she uses legitimate power and information power the most. She used to be more hands-on and was more available to staff for problem-solving, but there was a shift in power above her and in response to that she is unable to be as present on the unit as before. She keeps us informed of changes in the organization and the reasons behind the tasks that she asks us to do. The tasks that she asks us to do are requirements for our job title and are not negotiable. The way we carry out those tasks she can leave up to us, however, as long as objectives are met. She scored lowest on coercive power. She does not dictate or threaten us. We have a lot of new technology in our unit and although she is an excellent resource for many things, she is not up to date on the new computer system we are using. Overall her leadership and her determination to heal and keep our patients safe has brought us together and she encourages us to want to do better for our patients by working together.

I have worked for managers who stretched the truth and lied. It breaks up the team and resentment builds up against management and among the staff members. If there is truthful communication between the team and the leader, there is respect that flows both ways and teamwork and productivity will be better.
