I have selected the medical marijuana topic and am a proponent of this issue. I am on the side that thinks that this can really do some good in the medical field and help patients who are suffering from cancer, aids, pain, and other symptoms.

The three reasons that I chose from the opponents view are various legal drugs make marijuana unnecessary, marijuana is addictive and leads to harder drugs, and it is too dangerous to use (1). This is a difficult game because we are so conditioned to only think off all the possible arguments, and gather as much information to support our argument without using the believing aspect of an opponent’s position. After putting on my thinking cap, I sat down answered these questions.

1. What’s interesting or helpful about this view?

Various legal drugs make marijuana unnecessary:

Answer: This is an interesting view because there are plenty of legal drugs that have been tested and proven to work for illnesses that proponents of the issue say will help. It is helpful to see this side of the argument so that I can strengthen mine when it comes to proving my point.

Marijuana is addictive and leads to harder drugs:

Answer: This view is a little more difficult to swallow but I can see why opponents of this issue are saying this. I think it is interesting that after years and years of research they still have not found that Marijuana is no more a gateway drug than alcohol is, yet this keeps being mentioned in every debate. I think this is helpful because it can open up ways to prove this to be false.

Marijuana is too dangerous to use:

Answer: I see this as a legitimate concern for opponents of this issue because from the very beginning marijuana has been shown in a light as being evil and dangerous. You can look as far back as William Randolph Hurst who was a huge newspaperman and owned logging companies that produced the paper for his other business, so deeming marijuana evil stopped people from being able to use hemp instead of trees. You get where I am going here? Is it dangerous, it can be like any legal drug can be? This will be helpful to tying those points together.

2. What would I notice if I believed this view?

Various legal drugs make marijuana unnecessary:

Answer: I would notice that there is a plethora of legal drugs that can do what marijuana can do, but they have been tested and proven. With having been tested and approved by the FDA, the people are more inclined to use the legal drugs, hence making marijuana unnecessary. Again, there is another side of this that can disprove their side.

Marijuana is addictive and leads to harder drugs:

Answer: I would notice that as with anything when it comes to taking drugs (legal or not), you are acceptable to being addicted. This is a valid point but can be argued in favor of marijuana over harder legal drugs.

Marijuana is too dangerous to use:

Answer: This kind of goes along with the last view and I would notice that any drug can be dangerous if not used correctly and carefully. So this could be where both sides could agree that all drugs can be dangerous. Just listening to all the side effects of legal drugs on every commercial, is enough to scare you from taking them.

3. In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true?”

Various legal drugs make marijuana unnecessary:

Answer: There are many legal drugs on the market today that can compete with marijuana and have been tested and proved, which would give the opponents view an excellent condition to make this idea true.

Marijuana is addictive and leads to harder drugs:

Answer: Like I stated earlier, any drug can be addictive and if you abuse marijuana to the point that you do not want to do anything else but get high, then this could be true.

Marijuana is too dangerous to use:

Answer: I think if you were smoking marijuana to an abusive level it could affect the lungs and this condition would be true.
