observations 2

The goal of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to observe children and relate your experience to the theory we are learning in the classroom. Observing children can help to give you a better understanding of their behavior, temperament and development.

There are many ways to observe children effectively. You may choose to observe in a classroom, home environment or public environment. You should plan to spend one to four hours in your observation. Students interested in observing in a classroom will need to call the school ahead of time and schedule an appointment for the observation. Please keep in mind when you observe in a school that you represent Atlantic Cape Community College and it is important to present a professional image at all times. I will supply you with a letter of introduction for your observation.Students may choose a home environment to observe in. This may include a relative, your own or a friend’s child/ren. Keep in mind when you observe children you want to limit your interactions with the child/ren so you can obtain a clear picture of what is actually happening during the observation period.

Students interested in observing in a public environment such as a soccer game, ice skating rink or playground, should tell the parents that they are observing their child/ren for a class. Let the parents know that the child/ren’s identity will not be disclosed.

You will need to answer the following questions in your Observation Project:

    1. Describe the setting you are observing. Include the number of children, age, adult in charge, where the observation took place and how long you observed the child/ren.
    2. If you are observing in a classroom try to spend some time with the teacher prior to starting your observation so you will know what the teacher is trying to accomplish with the children. It will also give you a feel of the schedule the children will be following. You may want to know if this is a typical daily schedule or is something special happening in the classroom.3. If you are observing a friend or relative’s child, try to find out if what you observed is typical behavior for that child or did something unusual occur during the observation.

    4. Describe the child/ren’s interaction with other children, and/or adults. Include the type of interactions that were taking place. (Example: The teacher told the children it was time to clean up their toys. Most of the children responded and started to clean up their toys.)
    5. Pick one of the theorists we have discussed in Chapter One and relate your observation to that theorist. For example, if you pick Piaget and observed an infant you would describe what the child is learning in the sensory motor period. If you are observing a classroom you would describe the children’s developmental levels for the age you are observing. For example, in a preschool classroom you would describe how the children learn though socialization and adult guidance as explained by Vygotsky.
    6. Include your opinion of the observation. If you were the adult in the situation is this how you would relate to the children? Did the adult understand the children’s developmental needs and levels? Was the adult responsive to the children’s needs?7. When you have completed your Observation Project post it to the discussion area topic called “Observation Project.”

    8. Method of evaluation on the following criteria:

    • Description of the environment and setting you are observing. (30 points)
    • Description of the regular routine and the actual events you observed. (30 points)
    • Description of the child/ren’s interactions and the adult’s interactions. (30 points)
    • Interpretation of the child/ren’s behavior and activities and how they relate to a specific theorist. (30 points)
    • Your opinion on the observation and the quality of the adult interactions, and the environment. (30 points)
    • Clarity of the information presented. (Can another person understand what you have written.) (10 points)
