Having the last name Green I chose a logical function. I choose the IF function. This function looks at specific values and returns a response based on what I tell it to say. This is a powerful function and it can do many things. The most interesting thing I found is you can use more than one “if” statement to build a formula. Using this in daily life makes things much more simple. For example, you have a spreadsheet that is 5000 lines long and 8 columns wide. You need to determine if column B is the same number as column C and you don’t have time to look through 5000 rows of data. Add a column with an IF statement. If cell C1 = cell F1 return the value of true. If it does not equal return the value of false. If you copy that formula down all rows you can very quickly see which ones equal and which ones don’t making a job that could have taken forever take about 5 minutes.

Category: Financial

Function: PPMT

Description: The PPMT function is used to calculate the principal portion of a given loan payment. PPMT can be used to get the principal amount of a payment for any period of a loan based on constant payments and a constant interest rate.

Use case in business/personal setting: One of the best ways I can see using this function is to help manage personal finances. If an individual wants to calculate the cost of principal, they will pay on something like a car loan with a set interest rate and time period. As a loan is paid, the amount of money paid to interest decreases but amount paid to principal increases. Project managers and accountants can use this function to track the amount of money being paid to principal on a loan. Banks may also benefit from using the PPMT function for the same purpose.

This function requires syntax of Rate, Per, Nper, and Pv.

Rate = interest

Per= period (1-Nper)

Nper=total # of payments

Pv= the amount that a series of future payments is worth now.

CLASSMATE POST #3

As we began the last unit I noticed that I was starting to see the issues with my computer speed. Given that the laptop is now five years old it makes sense that I would have issues with CPU speed. I searched for a replacement for my Intel i5 4200U dual core with a base clock speed of 1.60 GHz (CPUBenchmark, n.d.). It has a 3MB cache and the bus speed is 5 GT/s DMI 2.0. The cost of the CPU is $281 currently. I would prefer to more than double the cores and increase the speed a tad as I am not a heavy user but do not want latency while working.

I looked into three Intel processors for comparison; the i5 8265U, the i7 8665U, and the i7 9850H (CPUBenchmark, n.d.). The first two, i5 8265U and i7 8665U, come with quad cores and the i7 9850H has six cores. The clock speed differs throughout the three. The 8265U is at 1.6 GHz, the 8665U is at 1.9 GHz, and the 9850H is at 2.6 GHz. The cache size is increases as they go up in model numbers. The 8265U has 6 MB while the 8665U has 8 MB and the 9850H has 12 MB. The bus speeds are similar for the 8265U and 8665U both running at 4 GT/s OPI which is DMI 3.0 and is a step up from my last processor. The 9850H runs at 8 GT/s DMI and is also 3.0. Surprisingly the cost jumps up and down as we go up in model number. The 8265U is $297, the 8665U is $409, and the 9850H is $395.

I would choose the i7 9850H for a number of reasons. It has more than double the cores and the bus speed is over also. I also feel like the price point isn’t that bad considering its right there with the 8665U. I’m interested in staying with a laptop so I can go back and forth. I would like it to last the next five years. Only difference is this time I will be using this one more often and perhaps for more intensive things with school. So the best way is to get the right hardware for the tasks I need it for.

The CPU’s that I researched are AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, Intel Core i9-9900K, Intel Core i5-9400F, and AMD Ryzen 5 1600. All four of these range in price. The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X is $329. The Intel Core i9-9900K is $470. The Intel Core i5-9400F is $143 and the AMD Ryzen 5 1600 is $140. The number is cores that the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X has is 135. The Intel Core i9-9900K has 144. The Intel Core i5-9400F has 120 and the AMD Ryzen 5 1600 has 102. The clock speed for the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X is 3.6 GHz, the Intel Core i9-9900K is 3.6 GHz, the Intel Core i5-9400F is 2.90 GHz and the AMD Ryzen 5 1600 is 3.2 GHz. The cache size for the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X has 32 MB, the Intel Core i9-9900K has 16 MB, the Intel Core i5-9400F has 9MB and the AMD Ryzen 5 1600 has 16 MB.

The CPU that I would choose would be the Intel Core i9-9900K. I would choose this CPU because from what I have read, it seems to be on the higher end of the CPU’s. The features are more up to date and faster which is something that I need. I don’t want to have to wait on the CPU to have to think about what it wants to do and when it wants to do it. This CPU is the most expensive out of the four that I chose to discuss, however, if it were to do the job that I needed to be done properly, I would not mind paying the price to have the quality that I am looking for in a CPU.
