CLASSMATE POST #1

Know your audience! The first and most important rule of presenting your work is to know your audience members. If you can put yourself in their shoes and understand what they need, you’ll be well on your way to a successful presentation. Keep the audience in mind throughout the preparation of your presentation.

Create a clear, logical structure you’ll need to think about creating a clear, logical structure that will help your audience understand your work. You’re telling a story, so give it a beginning, middle, and end.

Prepare your visual materials carefully Visual materials, probably in the form of PowerPoint slides, are likely to be a vital part of your presentation. It is crucial to treat the slides as visual support for your audience, rather than as a set of notes for you.

CLASSMATE POST #2

PowerPoint presentations are designed to provide talking points on a specified topic. Having a PowerPoint with too much information piled onto a slide makes it difficult for views to read, and all too easy for the presenter to lose focus on a topic or talking point. Instead, using the notes section below a slide is the preferred way to keep information organized. The viewers will not see this information during the power point, thus leaving each slide available for clear and concise talking points without seeming overly complex. Consider asking questions to viewers occasionally during the presentation to provide a sense of engagement. Every PowerPoint should contain a simple slide with a title and a brief description of the topic. This will give readers a quick understanding of what the presenter will be discussing. Slides on a PowerPoint should be kept simple, it may be too enticing to add pictures in every slide, but again this can make a presentation unprofessional, especially when it leaves little to no room for text. However, in some instances, pictures can help express a thought or point. This helps prevent the presenter from having to spend unnecessary time with explanations or descriptions. Be sure to use proper design and themes that best suit the topic being discussed and ensure text is clear, legible, and contrasts the background. Finally, be sure to add a final slide with references if necessary, and contact information. This slide can be left up during questions at the end of a presentation to allow anyone to copy any contact info. These are just a few tips to Don, or anyone, can use to add a little professionalism to their next PowerPoint.

CLASSMATE POST #3

I do not go to coffee shops, or any type of business where the WiFi is free and the business’ purpose is to have the customer sit down and stay for a while. The only free WiFi that I use that is unsecured at a business is the one in the grocery store. The only reason that I connect to it is because I do not get cell phone service in there and my son likes to watch kid videos on YouTube. I do not use the connection to do anything for myself. When I connect to the WiFi, it directs me to an agreement for usage page before it will allow me to use the connection. It is still unsecured because it does not ask for a password, or user account. The reason that I do not use it to do anything else on the network is because I know that it is unsafe. Honestly, I don’t use my phone to do anything but communicate and watch YouTube videos. I do not know anyone that uses free WiFi either because they know better. There are too many occasions where the owner of the wireless router does not change the admin password and uses the default IP address. This gives the chance for anyone to access the router and see the IP addresses of people who are connected. Having the IP address of any device connected to the router opens the door for that person to access my device illegally if they can get past any security that may be on the device.

CLASSMATE POST #4

I typically do not use open networks simply because I am terrified of someone hacking into my phone or laptop. I am very OCD when it comes to using public networks because you just can’t trust this type of stuff anymore as you used to, or at least I cannot. If I have to use an open network, I will not access my personal information such as my bank account or anything that requires use of my card numbers. If I am on an open network, I will check email or social media. I typically change my passwords to social media and email at least every two months just to be on the safe side. I am quite sure there are many people that access all type of personal information while being on a public network. These people probably don’t think twice about the risks they are taking when they access this information publicly. I could agree that I once was one of these people, however, I am familiar with too many people that have had their identities stolen or money taken from their accounts. I am aware that there are other ways that money could be taken from accounts and identities stolen, however, I would choose to take all necessary precautions by not using public networks. My job has a public network for visitors and patients and I’m sure they are tracking everything that is being watched or used on that network, however, I choose not to use this network either, even though my data runs entirely too slow while I am in the building but I would prefer to be safe rather than sorry.
