Determine whether leaders are born or made, based on research. A leader by definition is one who has commanding authority or influence. (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). Leaders teach, guide, empower, and bring out the best in others. They cannot do this unless they believe in themselves. As Major General Perry Smith states that , he feels that “Good leaders are mostly made”. They learn how to do things by doing and by studying about leadership.(NBC,1999). Leaders role model people of a higher caliber, of character and someone who has vision to lead within a community as well as family. (NBC,1999). Leaders study and practice leadership. Not only are there studies in leadership, this can also be a part of them as they grew and has been learned that way. Whether in a school setting , i.e. sports, classroom, in playing with friends, etc., this can lead to leading in a work environment , in the corp world as well as in an agency and/or military.

Explain the implications of leaders being born rather than made. People have charisma. To some , it can be a natural characteristic and can flourish over time, for others , it can be a learned trait, but in many occasions it can come off as fake, unnatural , and simply not genuine. Good leaders usually have a role model . Someone who they look up to or looked up to who lead by a positive and healthy examples. Typically , role models are not found in celebrities, athletes , or social media persona. (Kouzes & Posner, 2017). Made leaders know the many different challenges that lay ahead of them as well as rewards. They can reflect and better themselves in learning how to be an effective leader which can guide others into a leadership role as well if they welcome it. So called born leaders have different outlooks and perspectives in many given situations. Born leaders are very far and few in between.

Moral leaders continuously build muscles. They don’t stop learning when they reach certain point in their career or life. They look for guidance themselves and they view life as an ongoing lesson. 3. Leaders are animated by courage and patience. Leaders are focused on doing the right thing and doing it the right way. Leaders speak out and step up to the plate, and they speak and act in truth. In being patient , it could be trying , but sometimes one needs to ride the roller coaster in the ups and downs and let sone situations work out in their own time. 4. Moral leaders inspire and elevate others. They take in considerations for other’s purpose and goals. Leaders listen and inspire others to be better and rise above. (Seidman, 2017).

Leading constituents, agencies , and stakeholders on an individual level as well as in a multilevel capacity, all aspects of moral leadership plays a part. As a whole , there needs to be a purpose for all. Purpose flows into a journey , and not only for oneself which is important , but taking others along on the journey with you. In getting to your goal, and in going about it the right way creates a sense of team, as they are able to see a positive example being set for them. Learning from one another, collaborating together, celebrating the good and getting through the tough times and downfalls together and learning from it. When all is used in tandem and continuously practiced , leaders are always being made.

Determine whether leaders are born or made, based on research.

There are certain personalities and personality traits that are present in ‘natural’ leaders. They tend to be charasmatic, outgoing and confident. These individuals may have an easier time achieving a leadership role. However, with personal and professional experience and knowledge comes a confidence to take on leadership roles for most professionals. Some of the best leaders are made from great leaders. A great leader can instill in an individual the sense of value, confidence, and accountability that will help them to grow professionally.

Explain the implications of leaders being born rather than made.

To say that leaders are born and not made limits the potential for the majority of employees. A predetermination of an individual’s capacity for professional growth will prevent them from not only becoming a leader but from taking initiative and achieving professional goals. When there is no expectation of improvement, there will not likely be any motivation to improve.

Analyze the four moral goals of leadership in terms of skills, approaches, and impacts on stakeholders.

Leaders should possess excellent communication skills. They need to have an awareness of the individual needs of their employees and know the most effective way to help them with their professional development. Leaders should monitor their employees to ensure they are not overwhelmed by their assigned task. Ensuring the employees are handling their position effectively will ultimately insure the community is not being under-served. Feedback to the employees in critical for instilling a sense of initiative and responsibility. Adjusting expectations and responsibilities accordingly when an employee is either struggling or flourishing will contribute to their continued success.

Apply the four moral goals of leadership to a criminal justice leadership position example.

A leader in a criminal justice organization has an added responsibility of having to answer to the criminal court system. Leaders in the probation department need to put thier officers in a position to succeed. Assigning a caseload that is not overwhelming will help to stave off burnout and create opportunities for success. Pairing officers with client caseloads is a critical part of balancing the needs of individuals with the needs of the community. If an officer is assigned a caseload that they are not equipped to supervise, the clients are not likely to succeed and the officer in turn will not be successful. Monitoring the compliance of the clients and the effectiveness of the officers is a sure way to measure success. Leaders need to make sure the actions and results are in concert with the overall mission statement and goals of the organization. The work of probation officers is mostly independent supervision of clients. Having an environment of open communication and collaborative goal setting will instill a sense of initiative and responsibility in officers. When someone feels valued, they are more invested in themselves and the organization.
