Hi Professor Allen and classmates,

The nursing profession in the Caribbean made significant strides during the 1950s,standards for the training, certification, and registration of nurses were established throughout the region (Nursing in the Caribbean, n.d.). Our nursing program in Trinidad and Tobago was based on the British system, after our first six months of being in classroom learning the Fundamentals of Nursing ( this was actually the name for this six month block), we were sent out on the wards to practiced what was learnt under the supervision of our Nursing Instructors. I could highlight my nursing instructors because they did an excellent job of educating/training as evidenced then by the 98% success rate on our Hospital Finals examination, but instead I will take this opportunity to speak about the impact Sister Matooram made to nursing.

According to Finkelman (2014 ), nursing was not standardized during the 1600s and 1700s and the word nurse brought up images of unskilled and unpleasant laywomen (p. 59). Sister Matooram was the Head Nurse of one of the Pediatric Medical Wards at The General Hospital, Port Of Spain and as a manager, she was very efficient, knowledgeable and willing to teach , she was very strict when it came to the quality of work expected from the staff that she managed and because of that, there were some junior nurses who were afraid of being rotated to her ward.

I admired how she collaborated with the doctors and other members of the interdisciplinary team; she had a great rapport both with the parents and the children that she cared for. I admired how despite the chaos left from the admissions, she came in the next day and methodically took care of the admissions as she rounded with the doctors and then calm ensued on the ward again. I will never forget her words to “ Nurse Spencer, remember, if it’s not charted, it’s not done”. Sister Matooram may not be famous, she displayed the qualities of a strong nurse leader and taught me the importance of following policies and procedures and under her guidance I became the professional that I am.
