The nurse I interviewed was my mother. She has impacted how I practice a lot. She has always been so cautious and always put patient safety first no matter how much others have given her a hard time for doing so. My mother as been a perioperative nurse her entire career. At the first hospital she started at the hospital did not have a safety plan for a fire in OR and she started a safety program that included this and about 8 months after she started this program there was a fire in the OR and the things that she had implemented saved the patients life. After this the director made her the head of the fire safety program and had her come up with a PowerPoint and teach everyone that was in the OR fire safety in the OR setting. That particular incident came with a lawsuit a couple years and it was her charting and safety plan that cause her to be dropped from the case. It is so important to put patient safety first. This happened way before I started even thinking about being a nurse and it has stuck with me from the beginning as a nursing student. Every time I chart I think about this situation and how important it is to chart everything we do for our patients even if it small and may seem insignificant. I also think this carries over into how I am contributing to nursing history because I am teaching the important lessons I have learned to any student that follows me for the day and any new grad that I precept. Safety should be in the forefront of all that we do. My favorite quote that my mom told me and that I heard from teachers many times in nursing school is “If you didn’t chart it, you didn’t do it.”
