Happy employees are the key to a successful thriving business. Making employees number one boosts morale and creates a sense of loyalty and pride in the workplace. This empowers them to make their own decisions and pave their own path to success while creating a better workplace culture. Empowerment is so influential! Employee participation has a direct positive impact on business success (Manning & Curtis, 2015). In my opinion, this is not all that common. This is due to the trifecta of lack of knowledge, ignorance and arrogance. The focus and need for power and money is so prevalent. If the big wigs knew what it was like to be “the little guys” there would be an improvement? This reminds me of the TV show Undercover Boss. High-level corporate executives secretly take “low-level jobs” within their companies to find out how things really work and what their employees truly think of them. I have seen a few of these episodes and they are powerful! So emotional, each one left me in tears. They (the executives) truly have no idea what their employees do for their company and customers or what they go through every day. I think all corporate individuals would benefit from working a day or two in their employees shoes.

I do not think there is enough of this in the healthcare industry. I have not met many people who are truly happy and enjoy their job. I know I still haven’t found my dream job.. Healthcare companies claim to have a passion for people and patient care; however, so much focus is on surveys, numbers, and budget that the employees suffer and feel insignificant. In my short ten years of experience is the healthcare field I have seen amazing nurses burnout and high absenteeism and turnover rates. A study done in England of 834 nurses showed the quality of care a nurse provides is directly predictive of job satisfaction (Adams & Bond, 2000). The patient’s length of stay was shortened based on the efficacy of nursing care. Bottom line, happy nurses have a direct impact on good quality patient care.

I did not see any healthcare industries on the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For list from last week, granted I did not look through all 100, but the top companies were not healthcare based. How do we change this though? The cost of healthcare is only increasing and the demand for more is becoming greater. It is not going to matter if we are happy… we are simply filling the void most just working to live. And I truly dislike that I feel this way! I hope someday to work for someone that can change my mind.
