Option 2: Cultural sensitivity is crucial to local and global success. It is very difficult to be aware of and sensitive to issues and traditions we are ignorant about. How can we decrease our own ignorance? Can we be proactive about it, or do we just have to wait until someone alerts us that we are being insensitive?

I am personally of the opinion that you should always be learning and observing. If you have waited long enough to be alerted that you have been insensitive then it is likely already too late.In the workplace, it is vital that you maintain the absolute most professional attitude possible. In most business, and certainly in nursing, it is highly likely that you will cross multiple different cultural backgrounds in any given day and knowing how to act accordingly is vital. In nursing, it is vital as different cultures will approach health care in different ways and if a nurse is culturally unaware or inappropriate it can cause a variety of poor reactions. “Being culturally competent and aware will increase our skills in providing care to our patients. Recognizing and acting upon our nursing assessments among diverse cultures as well as vulnerable ones is key to saving someone’s life” (Jimenez, 2015). At the very least it may impair the patients trust in you, at the very worst it could interact with another cultural custom and it could cost the patient their health or their life, or it could set you up to not only help their immediate medical problem, but provide a better health future for them overall.

It is possible to be passive about cultural sensitivity. For instance, when in new cultural environments the first thing I do is observe to see what I an ascertain simply from general exposure. However, being proactive is always advisable. One such way of being proactive would be to directly ask the people you are working with whether they are patients, other coworkers, or clientele what would be the best way for you to be respectful to their cultural needs.I know that in nursing this is vital as it is entirely possible that because a patient may not identify with or follow all aspects of their culture.

Manning and Curtis (2015) had a few recommendations for how to help to be more culturally aware including connecting with your own culture, empathize with being the minority or different, seek out educational opportunities, attend cultural events and immerse in arts such as books or movies, and communicate with people who are different (p.324 – p.325).While it may be impossible to know everything about every cultural, at the very least it costs nothing to attempt to be respectful and to be aware.Educational opportunities exist everywhere and if we seek them out then we can learn and better interact with the world around us.
