In Amy Tan’s essay “Mother Tongue,” we see how Tan’s mother is often not respected because of her spoken language, and how Tan has to step in, even as a teenager, to speak for her mother. What impact do you see that this experience has on Tan’s sense of identity and how she approaches everything, from taking the SAT to her career as a writer? Additionally, reading personal narratives like “Mother Tongue” can also help promote empathy in readers, probably because the writers of these stories are often their own likable characters.
