MARCH 29th ASSIGNMENT – BMA – DUE APRIL 19thPosted on: Monday, March 29, 2021 12:59:45 PM EDT* This week you are to familiarize yourself with modern and contemporary art by visiting the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA).At the beginning  of the 20th century the developing world view of reality changed radically. In 1900 Sigmund Freud explored the structure and power of the subconscious mind. In 1903, the Wright brothers flew the first power driven aircraft. In 1905, Albert Einstein changed our concept of time, space and substance with his theory of relativity. Matter could no longer be considered solid; it was recognized as a field of energy. Modern art is the result of a series of revolutions in thinking and seeing . It’s characteristics are those of the twentieth century itself; rapid change, diversity, individualism and exploration. The following list is just a sample of art styles that moved us away from thinking the ability to represent realistically is the best measure of an artist’s skill.1. IMPRESSIONISM – landscapes and scenes of ordinary life rendered by the artist capturing momentary qualities of light.2. POST IMPRESSIONISM – intense personal expression of everyday experiences with strong color contrast and bold texture used to convey emotion and energy.3. ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM – pure expression of feelings with lines, shapes, colors and textures and little or no concern for representation.4. CUBISM – abstract representation by reducing things to simple geometric shapes.5. SURREALISM – the unconscious made visible ; the transforming of familiar objects by absurd juxtapositions that create a disjointed and dreamlike quality.6. MINIMALISM – extraordinarily simple in both form and surface; the painting is seen simply as an object with no representation or expression.7. POP ART – easily recognized visual imagery taken from mass media and popular culture.8. Photorealism – no emotion, no message, absolutely perfect realistic representation.9. POST MODERNISM – combines elements of vastly different styles directly referencing various periods of history and specific cultures.* Your task is to find examples for each of the above styles; state the title of the work of art and the name of the artist. DUE; APRIL 19th.
