make connections research hurricane dorian in the bahamas

As we have been reading about the events of a devastating storm and its socio-political effects in 2005, another major hurricane has been making its way from the Bahamas to the East Coast of the United States.

Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas on September 1st, when it was a Category 5 storm with winds reaching 185 mph. Like Hurricane Katrina in 2005, it destroyed the infrastructure of the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama. And like Katrina, it put the fate of a group of displaced citizens in the hands of government officials and rescue agencies.

For example, just yesterday, President Trump told reporters “I don’t want to allow people that weren’t supposed to be in the Bahamas come into the United States, including some very bad people and some very bad gang members and some very, very bad drug dealers.”

According to ABC News, “since he took office in 2016, Mr Trump has made multiple efforts to stem the inflow of migrants, mainly from Central America, and previously made similar statements about immigrants from Mexico, suggesting they were ‘rapists’ who would bring ‘drugs’ and ‘crime'”.

This assignment gives you the opportunity to make use your reading as a lens through which to interpret the events that have been unfolding in the path of this recent hurricane and its socio-political effects.
