Answer the question:

Identify evidence-based strategies to increase self-awareness and the ability to self-regulate for students with ASD.

Responsd to student discussion boards:

(Shan) Student’s with autism typically struggle with self-awareness and self-regulation. One evidence-based strategy is to teach the student to use a self-awareness checklist. The child can go through a list of questions to help them identify their feelings and thoughts. This can be followed by calming cards. The child can select a calming strategy like deep breathing, sitting in a calming corner, asking for a hug, etc. Another technique is using a red/ green card. The child can flip their card to red to let the teacher know that they are having trouble and the teacher can help them find a calming strategy to help de-escalate their emotions.

(Mich)Teaching self-awareness is a key component for the program I teach. I teach social skills and behavior to high functioning ASD students. At the intermediate level, we focus on teaching self-awareness of self-doubt, obsessive feelings, and depression. These behaviors are inaccessible by anyone other than the student and teaching self-management is the key to changing these behaviors (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2019). Teaching self-management can easily be generalized by the student as well. One assignment we start with is teaching the student to listen to their inner coach and not their critic. Throughout the school year, we often refer back to the inner coach and inner critic when the students are exhibiting self-doubt. Our students also do an emotional “check-in” first period and depending on the response they have a list of strategies to choose from to improve their emotions.
