Linux and Unix are known to be better competitors in the server-level operating systems market as opposed to the desktop PC operating system market. Linux is considered to be a low-cost alternative to UNIX but is not technically superior to UNIX. Linux is able to engage more users into transitioning from UNIX by promoting the use of inexpensive generic servers. Whereas with UNIX, the costs involved with server hardware is comparatively high. The open-source component of Linux allows users to customize the operating system’s kernel and meet the needs of the OS. The capability to run Linux on multiple hardware’s adds an advantage. The flexibility in choosing desired hardware to run the Linux OS reduces the burden on users to change hardware to meet Linux operating requirements. Custom application development is more feasible through the Linux OS where the open-source code can be debugged by developers and code can be modified to meet OS level requirements or develop new Linux based applications. Such features with Linux make it more favorable against UNIX which is a proprietary source code and involves licensing (DiDio, 2004).

Though the cost of ownership and usage of the Linux OS is minimal, the major expense incurred by organizations to set up Linux OS is by engaging vendors to perform implementations of the Linux OS in the organizations’ systems. Vendors tend to emphasize on requirements that are not mandatory but preferred, leading to higher costs towards implementation. Linux has been more famous than UNIX over the years due to their open-source feature. When changes are made to code through open-source systems, problems can be expected at an OS level. At some point, the problems could become very cascading that it would require a Linux expert to solve for the issue. Finding in prompt technical support and service could be challenging with Linux. With UNIX, since the source code is proprietary there is a lesser risk to the OS and issues can be resolved quickly since there isn’t much time needed to analyze changes made by developers. At times UNIX hardware requirements can tend to be very costly. With the same cost, a better performing Linux server can be obtained to provide greater performance (DiDio, 2004)
