How to design footnotes in a thesis?

We will look at how to design footnotes in a thesis. Thesis is written on the basis of an analysis of 60-100 sources, which need to be referenced. There are several rules for referring to the source:

  • References to each source indicated in the list of used literature are desirable. Often, students refer to half of the books, articles, or Internet resources, for which they receive fair remarks from their supervisor. To avoid edits, link to at least 80-90% of books.
  • The number of books, monographs, scientific articles and dissertations should be more than Internet resources. It is very rare to find a topic where this rule does not apply. Needless to say, all Internet resources must be official, with accurate information. Avoid so-called “fakes”, personal opinions, blogs, etc.
  • Pages without footnotes don’t have to go one by one. Several sheets of the diploma, created on the basis of one source, are an illustration of the author’s frivolous approach to the search and analysis of literature. A number of scientific advisers write that the design of footnotes in the thesis requires the presence of 1-3 links on each page. However, no hard and fast standards exist for this issue.

Correct footnote formatting

footnotesThe thesis contains footnotes or references, their purpose is the same, but the design is different.

A link is an indication of the serial number of the original source in the list of references, and then, separated by commas, we write the page where you can find the quote.

For example, there is a link of the form [7, p. 89]. It means that the 7th book or article from the list of references was used, and having opened the 89th page, we will send the information on the basis of which the diploma was written. When it comes to Internet resources, the pages are not indicated, the design takes the form: [7]. When using several books, they are listed separated by semicolons: [7, p. 89; 9, p. 76]. Or through a dash if they go one after the other in the list: [7-11], that is, sources from the seventh to the eleventh inclusive are used.

Footnotes are a kind of notes, when a short description of the book is given below after the main text, indicating a specific place of citation. These footnotes are called subscripts. Previously, inline footnotes were still used, when the description was inserted directly into the text using parentheses. Inline notes have long been abandoned due to the complexity of the design.

The correct design of footnotes in the thesis involves the use of a special text editor function.

If the thesis is written in the Microsoft Word program, then the design of footnotes is done as follows:footnotes

  1. At the top we find the menu item “Links”, go there.
  2. We put the mouse cursor at the end of the quote and select the “Insert footnote” function.
  3. A superscript appears at the quote – the footnote number, and at the bottom is the place where you need to add a description.
  4. The rules on how to design the footnotes in the diploma state that the Times New Romance font is selected at 12 sizes and one and a half spacing. When writing, you need to give the surname, initials of the author, the full title of the book, the year and place of publication, the page where the quote is located.
  5. If the thesis contains a repeated reference to the source cited earlier, then the phrase “in the same place” is written.

Thesis contains footnotes with pagination or continuous numbering. In the first case, the design always starts with one for each page, and in the second, footnotes are numbered as they appear in the text.
