This is an upper level college survey course whose overall purpose is to provide an introductory

overview of the African experience in Africa and its global Diaspora, using a comparative approach.

“Diaspora” means dispersion or scattering. This course traces the voluntary and involuntary

movements of peoples of African ancestry across their continental homeland, and their

subsequent dispersion around the world to Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the

Americas—as well as their return to Africa. The course proceeds chronologically from the 14th

century to the present. Topics will include slavery; resistance movements and emancipation; the role

of women; religion; and a comparison of the development of modern, organized political

movements with intellectual currents in the African Diasporic communities—also with some

emphasis on contemporary developments.

COURSE OUTCOMES:

Upon course completion, a student will be able to:

  • § Describe and cite reasons for cultural similarities among persons of African heritage in the Americas as well as historical and cultural differences;
  • § Cite key moments in the history of African people across a range of geographical locations;
  • § Identify major historical of theories of human origins in Africa, African civilizations and technology pre-dating the Atlantic slave trade;
  • § Describe conditions of both voluntary and involuntary migrations of African people out of their continental homeland, to include trade, religious motives, slavery and the ongoing quest for freedom;
  • § Identify and postulate potential solutions to contemporary problems faced by African people through analysis of specific concerns.

Project:
Each student will complete a creative project, which expresses an idea/concept s/he has learned in this course. S/he may choose one of the following formats:

Short Story (must be at least 2 pages long)

This project will be scored based on the following five (5) criteria, each criterion being worth up to four (4) points:

o Historical accuracy of content o Creativity/Effort
o Cohesiveness/ClarityofIdea(s) o Grammar/Punctuation
