history of transnational justice from nuremberg to the icc

These activities dovetail with the PBS American Experience video found in Week 2 Lessons – Overview. Please make sure you have watched the video [55 minutes] and read the two chapters in Sands before answering the forum.

Please discuss the following:

  1. One of the many legacies of the Nuremberg trials has been the establishment of the International Criminal Court (I.C.C.), a permanent war-crimes court, in the Netherlands. A hundred countries have formally approved the agreement creating the I.C.C. The United States, however, is not one of them. Given Walter Cronkite’s narrative in the PBS video, how might this be explained? Further, should the United States join the I.C.C.? Read these two perspectives, from Human Rights Watch which favors U.S. participation in the Court, and from the U.S. State Department, explaining the U.S. government’s opposition to it.

Be sure to post “Yes” or “No” in the subject line of your initial post. Include specific references to the video and the Sands readings.

Your initial post should be at least 350 words. Please respond to more than 2 other students. Responses should be a minimum of 150 words. The initial required post should be supported by course readings using parenthetical references. Click here for a copy of the discussion rubric.
