1st assignment. ONLY NEEDS TO BE 1 PAGE…consider the following scenario: A group of anthropologists has recently begun studying an indigenous population deep in the Amazon rain forest. As part of their research, the anthropologists learn this group has used a plant that works as a topical anesthesia. It turns out that the plant can be harvested and used by doctors for surgeries.
Within a short period of time, a pharmaceutical company has learned of the plant and has created a patent on the plant. The patent will result in the company having legal claim to the new drug, but other groups, including indigenous populations, will have no way to benefit monetarily from the finding.
Because the indigenous population is unaware of the ways in which the patent will result in financial gains for the company, they sign away the rights to the patent.
If this scenario were to occur, what are some of the ethical ramifications for the scientists? How should the scientists respond? What are the scientists’ obligations to the indigenous group?
Provide one possible solution to this dilemma
