health service research

Respond to the two post below:

POST 1

Part I: A group of researchers is designing a study to examine at-risk factors for heart disease among a particular ethnic group. Is this health services research? Why or why not?

Health services research is a continually evolving terminology, which thinkers and organizations have defined differently. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), for instance, health services research explores the cost of care, the ways through which people access healthcare, and the outcome of patient care (Kaplan et al., 2015). This research is geared towards increasing the peoples’ understanding of the healthcare processes. Thus, a study in which the researchers aim to examine the at-risk factors for cardiovascular disorders can be categorized as health services research. This type of study aligns with the primary purpose and the goals of health services research.

The primary goal of health services research is to identify the most effective ways of organizing, managing, financing, and delivering high-quality care to patients (Sobolev & Gatsonis, 2018). This research addresses activities aimed at preventing diseases, identifying the risk factors, reducing medical errors in addition to improving the outcome of care. Similarly, the primary aim of a study examining at-risk factors for heart diseases in a particular population is to identify the potential causes of disease conditions together with the factors that make this group more vulnerable to this disease (Kaplan et al. 2015).

Just like a study in which the researchers are evaluating the at-risk factors for a disease, in health services research, researcher look at the way social and environmental factors, organizational structures ad financing systems affect access, quality, and outcome of patient care. The research domains of health services research include individuals, families, institutions, and organizations (Sobolev, 2017). Health services research does not explicitly address a single disease; instead, it addresses the process of care for all health conditions.

Part II: A group of researchers is examining the behaviors of lab rats as they respond to two different chemicals (drugs). Is this health services research? Why or why not?

A study in which the researchers are examining the behavioral impact of a particular drug on rats cannot be considered as health services research. This type of study does not meet the characteristics of health services research. In health services research, researchers seek to develop solutions to various issues that affect the quality and outcome of patient care. These types of studies are focused on documenting the deficiencies in patient and population health. Some of the factors documented in these studies include medical errors, being uninsured, and inconsistent care, among others (Sobolev, 2017).

In a study exploring the behavioral impact of drugs on rats, the researchers are not interested in documenting the factors that might adversely affect the quality, safety, and outcome of care, but instead developing a drug which might be used in the cure of a specific disorder (Watson et al. 2018). This study does not show how government and private-sector health policies and the use of technologies affect the financing and the outcome of care. Moreover, this study does not address the impact of disease prevention and health promotion activities in a group of people.

Health services research goes beyond the evaluation of diseases or treatment interventions to assess health status as well as the health-related quality of life outcomes. Furthermore, as pointed out by Sobolev and Gatsonis (2018), health services research incorporates activities projected toward disease prevention and health promotion.

POST 2:

Health services research is studies conducted to examine social factors, financial systems, organizations, technologies, and behaviors. These studies are important because they help to make health care affordable, reliable, accessible, and it is focused on people’s well-being. In health services it includes surveys, statistical records, health care programs, financial systems, population, and administrative records. It can include different specialties, health care professionals, and they can use different approaches and methods within the study.

Part I: A group of researchers is designing a study to examine at-risk factors for heart disease among a particular ethnic group. Is this health services research? Why or why not?

This study looking at risk factor for heart disease by particular ethnic groups is considered health services research. Health services research studies are conducted on multiple ethics groups due to the diversity of the population. The need for these types of studies are very important. Organizations such as the U.S Department of Health & Human Services, are trying to find solutions to the growing needs of these types of studies. This study looks at different populations of people, social factors, and how they influence heart disease. All of these things are examined in health services research.

Part II: A group of researchers is examining the behaviors of lab rats as they respond to two different chemicals (drugs). Is this health services research? Why or why not?

When researchers are examining behaviors of lab rats as they respond to two different chemicals they are conducting health services research. This is considered this type of study because it includes study behaviors. These types of studies happen very often and they typically are only the start for examining things such as drugs. After lab rats are use most of the time the study will continue and the researchers will the use humans to determine behaviors and how drugs affect humans.
