Over-Emergence

Leadership emergence is “being perceived as leaderlike”. From reading the article for this week I would say over-emergence is when someone works their way to being a leader, but when put in the leadership position seems to fall short in effectiveness. I worked at a gymnastics facility for many years and I saw first hand where this happened. A mother of an athlete at the gym was close friends with the owner of the gym. The mother would constantly help with events at the gym and made sure to be there to help when the owner needed it. Due to her support of the owner, when it was time for the owner to move away, she chose the mother that was always there to take over the gym. While it seemed like a good idea for the owner to sell the gym to the mother it quickly became a negative decision. The mother that took over the gym had little to no business experience and was constantly making book keeping errors and letting employees get away with things. This to me is an example of over-emergence. While the mother seemed loyal and fit to handle the business with care, she was lacking in other areas required to run the business. I would say that this is specific to gender because the mother was genuine and caring (which are seen as female qualities) but lacked the ability to discipline employees. (Disciplining is typically seen as a male quality.)

The marble ceiling is related to the glass ceiling in the sense that it is an unseen barrier. The marble ceiling is different, however in the sense that it is not a stopping barrier between the woman and the work field. The marble ceiling is a barrier that does not stop, but deters. A woman has many things in the way of getting to where she wants to be in the workplace, but the marble ceiling is used to show that even though they have to get to the position they want differently and with more difficulties, they can still get there and are not completely stopped from reaching the position they want.

The article that we read this week showed how individuals make it to the top of a corporation. This article explains the differences between leader emergence and leader effectiveness. When it comes to being a leader, some companies don’t quite understand the difference between the two. From my understanding, emergent leaders are employees who begin taking on tasks voluntarily, helping others complete their duties better, and encouraging agreement between coworkers. This type of leader is someone that proves they are worthy of leadership before they are given the official title. Emergent leaders are fearless, independent, and possess exceptional people skills for which help them climb the corporate latter. The article also mentions the Gender Role Theory, which is where they discovered that there was prejudice against women when it comes to leadership emergence. This I find very interesting because even today many people assume that there is no gender role theory and women have it as easy as men do.
I have not worked in many jobs where I have felt like I couldn’t move up within the company. Currently, I work for a dealership remotely, and I find it hard to even switch from part-time to full time after my company changed both of my managers without also telling the remote staff. I don’t know how I would personally handle being held back because I am a woman.
The second article we read this week was about the concept of the marble ceiling. I found that the ideas of the marble ceiling and the glass ceiling relate in a way to each other but are still very different. As we learned last week, the glass ceiling is the concept that women are being kept from reaching the top of corporations. This week we learned that the marble ceiling is the challenges women face to gain both executive and legislative, elected offices.
