After previewing the text (always the first step) read:

1. “the introduction since introductions often (although not always) describe the piece as a whole.
2. The first sentence of each paragraph since first sentences are usually topic sentences and can give you an overall sense of the subject of the paragraph.
3. The conclusion or the final paragraph of the piece since conclusions often (although not al-ways) summarize a piece” (Carillo 14)

Note that if you read the first sentence of every paragraph, you are still reading quite a bit of the article (we could refer to this as speed reading rather than skimming).
