discussion question 1378

  • Reflective Discussion

This week is the official start of your practicum. To get you started in your reflective journal, begin by describing your practicum setting and the scope of assignments that you and your preceptor have agreed upon. In addition, share what you feel is your level of preparedness for the practicum experience. What are you looking forward to? What anxieties might you have?Be sure you write this journal “off-line” and then copy/paste to this discussion forum (do not upload as a Word document). This will be something you will want to look back at as you progress forward in your upcoming role as a nurse educator. With each Weekly Journal entry, you are also asked to reflect upon QSEN, IOM recommendations, your personal goals, course objectives, and Nurse Educator Competencies and tie these to South University’s College of Nursing Conceptual Framework Pillars (Caring, Communication, Critical Thinking, Professionalism, and Holism). This week, we will focus on the Nurse Educator Competencies as a baseline to help you assess areas you wish to develop during your practicum experience. Please download and read the following article from the SUO Library:Kalb, K. A. (2008). Core competencies of nurse educators: Inspiring excellence in nurse educator practice. Nursing Education Perspectives, 29(4), 217-219.Review the Core Competencies of Nurse Educators with Task Statement andReflect on the 8 core competencies:

    1. Competency 1: Facilitate Learning
    2. Competency 2: Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization
    3. Competency 3: Uses Assessment and Evaluation Strategies
    4. Competency 4: Participate in Curriculum Design and Evaluation of Program Outcomes
    5. Competency 5: Function as a Change Agent and Leader
    6. Competency 6: Pursue Continuous Quality Improvement in the Nurse Educator Role
    7. Competency 7: Engage in Scholarship
    8. Competency 8: Function within the Educational Environment

Reflect on competencies you identify as being most competent and those in which you need to develop more competence. Develop a plan for yourself for building your knowledge and skills in those areas you have identified as needing further development. Be sure to discuss with your preceptor and share the outcome of this in your reflective journal.Respond to at least two colleagues providing insightful, supportive feedback that meets participation criteria as noted in the discussion rubric.Reflective Discussion Rubric (applies to all weeks)
