Health Literacy Improvement
Health Literacy is an important aspect of Nursing Informatics, it’s how patients process and understand health information. When patients lack health literacy they do not understand their diagnosis and the treatment plans that the doctor makes for them. The big issue is making health literacy improvement plans for all clinics and hospitals, so that patients are better able to self-advocate in their health. We must be able to implement plans to explain in layman’s terms the instructions provided to the patient so that we can keep them from relapsing in health. Several studies were done where they implemented different strategies in clinical settings in order to improve health literacy between patients and medical staff.
Some of the methods used in the study was a mobile health app that helped the patients keep tract of their diabetes, as well as helped them keep up with their medications. This study was very important because it provided explanation and organization for the patients. The point of health literacy is to provide the patients with enough knowledge and understanding so self-sufficiency can occur and the chances of relapse decreases. During this study patients were found to be more compliant with their medications after they were able to comprehend the information given by the provider. The mobile app allowed them to track their blood glucose level efficiently and let them know when medication was needed.
The results of this study proved that people do not tend to be noncompliant from the beginning. People tend to fear asking too many questions and looking dumb or sometimes they do not understand enough to know what questions to ask. When given the right resources, that can explain their health in simpler or easier to manage ways then people are more willing to care for themselves.
Another process that should be done is proper training for doctors and nurses on how to simplify information for patients. Many times, the medical staff forget that the patients never had the training they received, so information needs to be simplified for all in the general population. Patients do not understand the consequences of their diagnosis most time, it is hard for them to know that if they do not take good care of their diabetes they will eventually lose toes or develop secondary diseases. As healthcare providers, we must have the sensitivity to every individuals’ situation and make sure we set up all our patients for success in the being of their treatment.
