Regarding the Enron Corporation case, I believe that this shows forth corporate greed at its’ finest. I learned about this case in one of my previous courses and it’s a confirmation that ultimately what wrong is done will eventually come to light. I am aware that unethical and questionable decisions are made especially on the level that Enron Corporation was on however, it’s still not excusable or justifiable. What I don’t understand is why it took Sherron Watkins so long to finally say something. Based on the tone of the letter from how I read it, while I do believe she was concerned for the company’s reputation, I feel that she was more concerned about herself. She says it clearly, “my eight years of Enron work history would be worth nothing on my resume…” Out of those eight years I would highly doubt that as a Vice President of Enron Corporation, Ms. Sherron Watkins was not aware of any unethical decisions being made. When people put their “blinders” on to certain situations, they end up having to make big lies to cover what once were “small” lies. This is exactly why ethics are so important in the business world. If Sherron Watkins was doing the right thing for her entire career then she wouldn’t have to worry about the “smart people” overlooking their finances. However, I do not believe that Sherron Watkins is a whistleblower. The email she sent out was an internal email to the CEO Kenneth Lay and I feel that she was just warning him and trying to get him to really understand the severity of the unethical behaviors that were going on. To my knowledge, she started speaking once the investigation started and the memo was used as evidence; you shouldn’t lie under oath!

The way in which this scandal affects me is just a reminder that I must vow to myself that regardless of how far I get in my professional career, I must stick true to my personal morals and values and stay ethical at all costs; regardless of if I feel that I can get away with or not. Also, I have to be aware of the unethical behaviors that are going on around me as well. Because the reality is that I never want to knowingly be associated with such a scandal as this one nor would I want to tarnish my reputation. Also, watch what I put in writing!
