Memory plays a key role in personal narratives and memoirs. The writer has to rely on what he or she remembers of past events to create the story. And, as we all know, memory isn’t always 100% reliable: we tend to forget certain details as time goes by, we sometimes mix up the order of events, and our emotions can often overshadow the facts. However, Wiesel tells us in Night that there are some things he will never forget.

On page 34 of the book, inserted among his remembrances of his first night at the camp, is what almost looks like a poem, with several sentences that begin, “Never shall I forget.” (If this section did not stand out for you, please go back and read it again!)

Why is that first night so memorable for Wiesel? He spent nearly a year in Nazi camps, yet that first night — the night his “life into one long night” — remains etched in his memory. What significance does it have, and why does he make sure we know he has not forgotten any of it?

The use of night as a metaphor in this book is especially poignant. Can you think of any people in the world today who may be living their lives as one long night? How will they, and how will history, remember their stories?
