Also include your understanding of Lee as an “Auteur” director (what themes/styles/stories do you find in common across multiple films by him? What makes his work recognizable?) And how do you think his work compares/aligns/contrasts/relates to…any of the other independent filmmakers you investigated from this week’s collection of trailers?

Before you address these last question, go to imdb.com and familiarize yourself with Spike Lee’s body of work, then watch trailers/clips from at least 3 others of his movies.

Same requirements as usual.

Here are a couple of examples!

“Spike Lee’s film Do the right thing is a film mostly about the hatred and bigotry in the world. The beginning credits of the woman dancing to Public Enemy’s Fight the power is very interesting because it coincides with Spike Lee’s themes in all his movies, pro black. It flashes to different characters throughout the day in the same neighborhood in New York. Everybody is getting into it with each other and what makes it worse is that it is very hot outside.Every race in the neighborhood is represented and racial slurs are thrown. This film depicts riots violence and police brutality. As for the message of the film violence does not beget violence. What they did at the end of the film was bad on both ends and no one came out a winner. Spike Lee, an independent filmmaker, themes usually are racially motivated mostly in favor of the black community in different settings. His style is. Most of his stories serve a purpose to show what is going on in our communities, what is being done about the issues at hand now and turning it around to make people think and see both sides and what is effective and what isn’t. What makes his work recognizable is the Jazz music and single and point of view shots, there is also the narration throughout the films, coupled with some sort of poetry. Store owners in Bed Stuy neighborhood get plenty of business from the blacks and hispanics that live there, but when people start to complain about the only thing they know is fighting. Fighting back caused death and destruction in their own community and no one had issues resolved, but there were some that woke up to what was going on and advocated against the violence. His work compares to the Choen brothers work with controversial topics and the point of view single shots like in the trailer for the movie Pi. Spike Lee’s work contrasts to the other independent films because of the fact the main themes of the other film clips in the course materials were fantasy and feel good type movies.”

“The film Do The Right Thing is a great movie that discusses the topic of race and racism. Specifically in the racist stereotypes scene where all of the races are saying racist stereotypes about different races. This scene shows the audience that people are separated from each other and ignorant towards one another. This scene is still relevant today because we are still divided against one another and many people believe in these racist stereotypes and have hatred towards other races.

Spike Lee’s first film was “She’s Gotta Have It” which brought him a lot of attention. He creates films that focus on race, politics, and history. Majority of his films focused on African Americans and often stars in his own films. I believe what makes his work recognizable is that he focuses on African American themes, racism, and US history, specifically during the Civil Rights era. His work reminds me of Jordan Peele who is a director, comedian, and actor. Jordan Peele creates films that also focuses on African American themes and casts African Americans. He also includes history and racism in his films such as Get Out. However Spike Lee’s movies often take place in earlier years while Jordan Peele is more modern. “
