Complete the rough draft of your Written Communication assignment about how to inform girls from less fortunate backgrounds about the new boutique and body lotion shop in their neighborhood. The purpose is to promote the need to the right audience to open a small business for girls from less fortunate backgrounds to empower them socially and economically.Below is a copy of a rough draft and the format that the rough draft should be inPart 1 IntroductionAs a dedicated registered nurse, I am pleased and excited to have the opportunity to apply for the position of General Surgery Nurse Manager.  I have been a loyal employee to Mary Washington Hospital for well over eight years now.  I have a vast array of experience in nursing that I have obtained from working on several different units at the hospital.  I started my nursing career by working on the general surgery ward and wish to return to the same unit to showcase my leadership skills.  I am speaking to you today to highlight exactly why I would be perfect for the open nurse manager position.  Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to meet with me today.AudienceI am speaking directly to the Director of Nursing for the post-surgical care department at Mary Washington Hospital.  She has been the director for over 3 years and I used to work under her on the surgical unit when she was nurse manager.Overview of Main PointsI have advanced knowledge of general surgery procedures.I have a wide array of experience in many different areas of nursing.I provide exemplary customer service.I have positive performance appraisals.Internal hiring is ideal.General Surgery KnowledgeI started my nursing career as a bedside nurse on this same surgical unit.  I grew from a nervous orientee to the competent nurse that I am today.  I relished the years I spent on the unit and the knowledge that I gained.  During the five years that I previously worked on the general surgery unit; I gained a tremendous amount of knowledge.  I am aware of the different surgical procedures that our patients undergo, and the exact plan of care needed to nurse patients back to health.  With this knowledge, I have to ability to fill in on the floor and care for patients directly when staffing needs arise.  I also have extensive working relationships with the surgeons on the floor.  This allows for better communication between providers and an opportunity for the unit to provide better patient care.  Effective communication is critical because insufficient communication between caregivers is one of the leading causes of medical errors and patient harm (1).Multidisciplinary KnowledgeIn addition to my years on the general surgery floor, I also have experience in  other areas of nursing.  I have worked on different units that include cardiac, rehab, orthopedic, palliative, pediatric, and oncology.  All this experience has contributed to my success as a nurse because so many patients today have multiple comorbidities.  While working as a nurse manager, I will be able to share my knowledge with the staff nurses.  A patient who had an appendectomy may also have Congestive Heart Failure, cancer, or COPD.  Any nurse who has extra knowledge in these conditions will provide better care to their patients.  I have had many different managers in my nursing career and have been able to learn from their successes and failures.  I have gained strategies on how to foster unit teamwork to get the most out of every employee, while also learning ways to prevent burnout and drops in morale.  My wide array of nursing experience is an asset to this organization. My Track RecordI take pride in my customer service and patient care skills.  In my 11 years as a nurse, I have never received a patient complaint.  I have received several Daisy nursing awards for excellent patient care and numerous nurse of the month nominations.  I have been a stern believer in treating every patient and their respective family members with dignity.  I have always reminded other nurses that unless a patient is having a baby, then they do not want to be in the hospital, and you are dealing with individuals in their most vulnerable state.  Patient’s who believe their nurses are competent and caring, will ultimately have better health outcomes by working as a team with their nurse.  In my present role as a case manager, I speak with patients daily about difficult issues.  This new experience only adds to my customer service skills and makes me a great leader for conflict resolution situations.PerformanceI take my job seriously and have never received a poor performance rating, nor have I ever been penalized for tardiness or calling out.  I have routinely volunteered to take higher patient loads and switch difficult patients with other nurses.  I have been voted as a charge nurse on every floor I have ever worked on.  As a charge nurse, I was not only responsible for my own patients but for overseeing the care of every patient on the unit.  I also went to nursing huddle as the floor representative, tracked patient flow, and made staffing plans for night shift to maximize both patient safety and hospital profitability.  I have proven that I am able to do my job at a high level while in supervisory positions.Internal HiringI have been a loyal employee to Mary Washington Hospital for many years.  I have witnessed many tough times due to budget cuts and staffing shortages.  I have seen many of my peers leave for other organizations or different career fields altogether.  I have stayed at Mary Washington Hospital because I respect the hard work of every employee that makes this a great facility to work at and for patient care.  Hiring internally has several benefits for the organization.   I am aware of the culture and mission of this hospital.  I have practiced the core values of the organization for years.  I started as a brand-new nurse at this hospital and by hiring me, it would increase morale for other nurses.  I have heard many times over the years, that there is no chance of promotion in this organization and I could help end that rumor.  A recent AMA survey found that 52% of employees are less loyal to their organization now than five years prior, mainly due to lack of promotion potential (2).  In addition, another study done by the University of Pennsylvania showed that external hires cost organizations 20% more than internal employees and these workers performed significantly poorer in their first two years as compared to internal staff (2).   I have gained the respect of other staff nurses at the hospital and I know what it is like work as a bedside nurse.  As nurse manager, I would be able to use my knowledge and supervisory role to strengthen employee-manager relationships and make the general surgery unit the best unit for nurses to work on and the safest for patient care.Part 2Channel:I would use a blended channel and more importantly a 1-1 conversation with the hiring director.  The conversation would take place prior to the formal interview.  The 1-1 conversation would help me gauge how interested the hiring director was and give me the ability to gain important feedback, such as body language.Style:I would use a Tell/sell presentation style for this 1-1 meeting.  My main goals for the conversation are to inform the director of my various skills and to persuade her to choose me as the new nurse manager following the formal interview.SourcesCatherine Dingley. 2008.
