It will introduce students to the various types of benefits and to current legislation and policies relating to them. Students will be encouraged to consider the implications of policies to the concerned client group by making contact with recipients of welfare benefits. In this way they can begin to understand recipients’ perspectives on welfare.
The content covered will include a brief history of the welfare state and the schemes under which welfare benefits are organised, i.e. contributory, non-contributory as well as hybrid schemes. Guest speakers, with expertise in particular fields may be invited for some lectures, thereby giving students the opportunity to also appreciate the views of the administrators of the Social Security system.
