descriptive paragraph 4

Writing descriptively offers a chance to practice the writer’s technique of “show, don’t tell.” A writer describes his or her subject (a person, place, or thing) in a way that allows the reader to experience it.

Here is an example of telling: “A woman is waiting by a window.” That sentence tells a little information, but it doesn’t paint much of a picture, does it? How could we show the scene to make it stronger and more vivid?

Here is an example of showing: “She shivers in her threadbare robe, her bare feet pressed up against the ancient heat register, as she peers through the yellowed lace curtain at the silent street. The moonlight spills across her cheeks like tears.”

The second example was stronger, wasn’t it? Could you see the woman in your imagination?

For your discussion response, try to paint your own picture with words. Write a paragraph response of 150-200 words, describing a person, place, or thing. Use descriptive details involving the senses (e.g., sights, sounds, smells, feelings, textures, colors, taste, etc.).
