course project topic thesis statement outline and reference page and rough draft

Topic selection for your project is

  • Domestic Violence

Start researching your topic and in 1-3 sentences, summarize what you want to include in your final project. In your summary, share 3-4 subtopics that will be discussed in your paper. Be sure to craft an organized summary to reflect the main idea of the paper and to explain fully the material that will be covered.

In your thesis statement, be sure to assert the main idea in a specific, clear, and complete sentence that is complex, innovative, and original. Overall, the thesis statement needs to indicate the main idea of the paper and identify the position you’ll be taking regarding the topic.

  • Example: Domestic violence affects the victim and the children involved by impacting them in social, psychological, and economic ways.

Throughout your summary and thesis statement, be sure to express complex ideas in clear and complete sentences that summarize the main points. Also, in your summary, be sure to identify the subtopics that you will be describing. In the example below, the subtopics are identified clearly by using numerals to highlight them.

  • Example: I chose to write my paper on domestic violence as it is an issue that happens every day in the United States. Domestic violence can be verbal, physical, or even sexual in nature. The subtopics will include (1) that domestic violence affects the victim and the family in many ways. Also, (2) many times the victim does not want to press charges either because he or she is afraid, or the abuser is the breadwinner of the family. Lastly, (3) many times the abuser gets a slap on the wrist when it comes to punishment as the courts can be inconsistent with sentences.

The topic selection and explanation are important parts of your paper because, in this exercise, you are laying the foundation upon which your paper will be built.

*** In a detailed outline, address the following:

  1. The working-title of your paper
  2. An introduction opening your paper leading into your thesis statement
  3. A thesis statement that clearly expresses your argument
  4. A historical context and a general overview of your chosen issue as it relates to the element of the criminal justice system. Include research to support the information.
    1. Historical information
      1. How has this issue changed over time? What is the current status of your particular issue?
    2. General overview
  5. What laws, rules or interventions relate to your issue? For example, is there a law or rule that dictates law enforcement response? Is there a rule of criminal procedure that the court must follow? Is there a mandated intervention or process that the courts facilitate?
  6. Identify challenges surrounding your issue
    1. Based on topic, several (at least 3) strong reasons or validations of challenges. These need to be supported with research.
  7. Why is this topic an issue?
  8. What could be changed to overcome the issue?
  9. Conclusion
    1. Include a paragraph concluding your paper, reasserting your thesis statement, and summarizing your issue and the challenges.
  10. References
    1. Include an APA formatted reference page containing a minimum of four (4) sources. Three (3) of these references must be from high quality, scholarly sources.

****As you are developing your rough draft, be sure to review and incorporate the feedback you received on your earlier assignments:

    • Module 01: Topic Selection and Thesis Statement
    • Module 02: Outline and References

    Your rough draft should:

    • Be written in APA format using proper spelling and grammar.
    • Have a properly formatted Title page.
    • Flow as one cohesive document with smooth transitions, presenting the topic as stated in the thesis and projected in the outline.
    • Have a properly formatted References page containing at least four (4) resources, of which three (3) must be from high quality, scholarly sources.
  11. The rough draft of your Course Project is due, and this is an excellent chance to receive constructive feedback! As it is used here, the term “rough” does not mean shoddy or careless. In fact, to make the most of this opportunity, prepare your rough draft as if it is your final submission. With that in mind, your rough draft should develop all of the ideas and supporting research presented in your approved outline and thesis statement.
